Duties

Ecology’s mission is to protect, preserve, and enhance Washington’s environment, and promote the wise management of our air, land, and water. Ecology’s goals are to prevent pollution, clean up pollution and support sustainable communities and natural resources.

Accidental spills of dangerous materials and past business practices have contaminated land and water throughout the state. Our mission is to get and keep contaminants out of the environment.

Some of the key work activities of the Source Control Scientist are:

  • Reviews source control data (including quantitative scientific data as well as qualitative data) to evaluate and make conclusions and recommendations to determine whether the upland sources of contamination to sediment sites have been sufficiently controlled to begin active remediation.
  • Develops templates and processes to reflect the method for data evaluation and decision making.
  • Reviews, analyzes and applies related research work to incorporate into the processes that are being developed.
  • Reviews and evaluates environmental site cleanup documents (remedial investigations, feasibility studies, cleanup action plans, etc) to ensure compliance with the Model Toxics Control Act.

This position is:
Unique as it allows a great amount of creativity and initiative to be brought into the work. Developing a method to conduct these evaluations provides an opportunity to work with many aspects of environmental science including fate and transport of contaminants, stormwater management, development of conceptual site models, analytical chemistry, toxicology, hydrogeology, among others.

The Team:
The Toxics Cleanup Program’s Aquatics Unit at the NWRO is comprised of a dedicated multidisciplinary team that includes engineers, hydrogeologists, toxicologists and environmental scientists that share a common goal: improving the quality of the environment in the state of Washington.  If you are passionate about the environment and are enthusiastic about taking on a challenge that requires you to work with a team that genuinely cares about Ecology’s mission, this is the opportunity for you.
