Job Purpose

Our AmeriCorps Field Educator will work with us towards our mission of connecting people, communities and the natural world. The Wenatchee River Institute Field Education Project incorporates our AmeriCorps Field Educator into all aspects of educational programming taking place. This will include teaching Field Days, teaching with the Traveling Naturalist program, developing activities for summer camps, instructing summer camps, and serving with adult and community education programs and workshops. Volunteers are also essential to our programs, and the AmeriCorps Field Educator will work with both staff and volunteers.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Teach hands-on, natural science education programs in both classroom and outdoor settings at Barn Beach Reserve and off-site locations
• Safely handle and care for live education animals
• Operate and maintain lab equipment and field equipment
• Manage participants’ physical, social, and emotional safety/risk
• Train volunteers on Field Day activities
• Create and implement lessons and activities for day camps (summer and school breaks)
• Instruct day camp programs
• Assist and support volunteers and high school interns
• Collaborate with Youth Education & Community Programs staff
• Teach programs independently and as part of a team
• Support Wenatchee River Institute mission and community outreach
• Evaluate impact of Youth Education Programs
• Share in campus stewardship responsibilities
• Take photos of programs and manage for different social media and marketing uses

Qualifications

• Relevant previous experience working with school-aged youth in a formal or informal capacity
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in science, environmental or multi-disciplinary studies or related field
• Current First Aid and CPR certifications or willingness to obtain
• Commitment to stewardship, conservation, and connecting youth to the natural world
• Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion within teaching and community
• Ability to work actively outdoors in a variety of conditions and share a tight office space
• Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing circumstances
• Ability to get to Barn Beach Reserve and other programming sites in and around Leavenworth and Wenatchee

AmeriCorps members are required to:

• Be a United States citizen or lawful permanent resident (must submit proof as defined by CNCS regulation)
• Be at least 18 years of age at the commencement of service (17 years of age with signed parental consent form)
• Pass required National Service Criminal History Checks
• Not be listed on the National Sex Offender Public Registry (NSOPR)
• Have a high school diploma or GED
