Job Overview :
This position will:The Sustainability and SEM Business Services unit within the Department of Sustainability and Energy Management in Stanford’s LBRE seeks a passionate and dedicated Analyst to fill a new 3 year fixed term role in the Office of Sustainability.
This position will:
- Support existing building-level conservation programs, such as holiday shutdowns, the Cardinal Green Office Program, the Cardinal Green Labs program, and the Sustainable IT program
- Coordinate between distributed building managers/occupants and Stanford’s heating, cooling and ventilation (HVAC) controls team to optimize building heating and cooling schedules for both energy savings and occupant comfort.
The ideal candidate will be adept at relationship-building and communications, but will also have a strong technical understanding of green building principles, particularly related to HVAC systems. The Analyst must be able to comfortably communicate with faculty, staff, and students across campus as well as engineers and controls technicians within the Department of Sustainability & Energy Management. This is an exciting opportunity for a technical sustainability practitioner to bridge the gap between building occupants and operations staff to achieve substantial energy savings through both behavior change and system optimization.
Core Duties :
1. Support building-level conservation programs (50%)
- Orchestrate building energy curtailments over the two week winter break and all other holiday weekends
- Expand communications to building managers regarding holiday shutdowns.
- Support the Cardinal Green Office Program
- Oversee building audits and energy and water saving device installations
- Implement building-level waste reduction and diversion improvements
- Support sustainable purchasing initiatives at the building level
- Develop and distribute suite of sustainability materials for occupants of new or retrofitted buildings
- Support the Cardinal Green Labs Program
- Build relationships with individuals who work in labs
Oversee installation of energy and water saving devices in lab settings - Administer rebate programs for energy efficient ultra-low temperature freezers, bio-safety cabinets, and other lab equipment
- Implement waste reduction and diversion programs in labs, such as lab glove recycling
- Build relationships with individuals who work in labs
- Support the Sustainable IT program
- Assist with planning of server relocation, virtualization, and replacement
- Administer Sustainable IT rebate programs
2. Optimize building HVAC schedules (35%)
- In new buildings:
- Establish regular communications with occupants and building managers post-turnover to understand HVAC issues and opportunities
- In existing buildings undergoing controls upgrades, work with building managers and occupants to:
- Update general building hours
- Administer surveys to identify appropriate schedules for each room
- Work with occupants to set new schedules and override options
- Maintain and update HVAC schedules for all buildings
- Confirm existing building schedules with building managers once per year and become point person for HVAC scheduling documentation & updates
- Maintain energy and cost savings documentation for all buildings, including targets, savings achieved to date, and total campus potential.
3. Support Building-Level Emissions Reduction Projects (15%)
- Support building electrification studies
- Maintain equipment electrification schedules and documentation
- Evaluate costs, savings, and other co-benefits from electrification projects
Position Requirements :
1. Education and experience
- 4-year college degree or equivalent or combination of education and relevant experience
- 2-3 years of job-related experience
- Master’s degree preferred
2. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Stakeholder engagement and relationship building skills
- Analytical skills, especially in quantifying energy and cost savings
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel
- Ability to think critically and perform due diligence when problem solving.
- Knowledge of green building principles, particularly related to heating, cooling and ventilation (HVAC) systems
- General knowledge of sustainability topics and concepts
- LEED accreditation a plus
- Ability to routinely and independently exercise sound judgment in making decisions.
- Experience with managing the full life cycle of a project-from inception and stakeholder engagement, to implementation, to evaluation.
- Ability to prioritize own work, multi-task and work with a sense of urgency.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS *:
- Frequently sitting, perform desk-based computer tasks, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
- Occasionally stand/walk, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, use a telephone, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 11-20 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS :
- Work on weekends and evenings.
- Work involves long hours of standing and sustained communications/dialogue.
