Application Due: 10/06/2019
Applications are invited for the position of Director, Sustainability at Macalester College. This position provides leadership in creating and delivering unique sustainability-centered programming for Macalester. The design and execution of this work will position the College to be recognized nationally for its creativity and for the unique elements that can be delivered only through access to the resources of a large metropolitan area. This position is not designated as faculty but is situated in the academic affairs division and reports to the Vice Provost of the College.

Working closely with engaged faculty and academic leadership, the Sustainability Director guides the unique and forward-looking integration of sustainability concepts and themes throughout the curriculum and our culture, especially as it relates to the urban environment. The Director develops connections at the interface of traditional academic work and co-curricular opportunities, collaborates to provide faculty development opportunities, and will teach one course per year in an area of their disciplinary expertise.

Beyond the academic elements of the work, the Director leads and energizes individuals, offices, and departments around shared sustainability objectives and activities, promotes a culture of collaboration among key non-academic stakeholders, and coordinates the reporting of key internal and external metrics. This work involves strengthening programming across functional areas of the College. All segments of the campus see the Director as a resource to be included in or consulted on any matter related to sustainability. The Director leverages existing networks in Macalester’s urban location to further cultivate connections with Twin Cities organizations and communicates Macalester’s innovative commitment to sustainability to constituencies beyond the College. Guiding these activities are natural connections between the social, economic, and environmental aspects of sustainability and the College’s mission.
