General Summary/Purpose:
The Sustainability Leadership Council (SLC) is a new initiative by Johns Hopkins University that was established to build a university-wide intellectual community comprised of faculty, students, and operations staff addressing university sustainability.
The mission of the SLC is to: Convene representatives from all university divisions, and provide a forum for discussion of environmental sustainability, planetary health, and climate and sustainability goals; Recommend and promote policies, programs and other initiatives that will build a greater role for the Johns Hopkins Institutions in teaching, leadership, research and practice on environmental sustainability, both locally and globally; Examine formal and informal structures and processes that inhibit Johns Hopkins Institutions from being more environmentally sustainable and recommend changes that foster greater environmental sustainability; and Enhance transparency of JHU’s sustainability initiatives, resources, and performance to better inform the University community.
The SLC Program Coordinator will be responsible for supporting the SLC in its operations and goals. The coordinator will report to the Director of Sustainability to plan, organize, market and execute meetings and events on behalf of the SLC and its co-chairs. The incumbent is responsible for managing relationships with each the SLC members. The coordinator will work on special projects and programs to support the SLC, which includes the creation of a web-portal, as a central website of all sustainability related activities and research at Johns Hopkins University.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Specific roles and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Establish and maintain strong, positive working relationships with colleagues throughout the Sustainability Leadership Council, JHU, and sustainability campaigns.
- Serves as a central point of contact and support for the SLC, accessible to students, faculty, administrators, and staff with general inquires.
- Assist the SLC co-chair and subcommittee chairs in planning events and initiatives including managing work plans, timelines, and budgets.
- Manage all details for a variety of large meetings and events including annual academic symposia.
- Creates, coordinates, and disseminates event communications and program announcements via email, web, social media, and print to internal and external audiences.
- Prepares and disseminates guides, newsletters, and other directorate publications.
- Develops web content and manages the JHU-wide sustainability portal, connecting all sustainability research and university activities in a central source.
- Ensure SLC expenses are properly documented, allocated, recorded, filed and reconciled.
- Provide general administrative support to the Co-Chairs of the SLC and subcommittee chairs as needed, such as scheduling meetings, taking minutes for record, and managing agendas, and sending email correspondences related to SLC matters.
- Communicate with faculty, staff, and student SLC members to ensure adequate participation.
- Collect and manage participation, research, and other SLC data.
- Supervise student workers as needed.
Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):
- Bachelor’s degree in Sustainability, Environmental Science or Studies, Public Health, or related field. One year of experience required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 2-3 years of experience working in a professional setting and supporting program activities
- Master’s degree in Sustainability, Environmental Science or Studies, Public Health or related field
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Demonstrated critical thinker, problem solver, and skilled in building relationships. Knowledge of and proficiency in the use of MS Office Suite software including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint –and experience in analysis and presentation of information.
- Exceptional organizational, writing, and research skills
- Demonstrated public speaking ability
- Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills, including public speaking and presenting
- Occasional domestic and international travel may be required
- Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with partners and colleagues as an effective team member

Any Specific Physical Requirements for the Job:
- Lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs in relationship to setting up and preparing for events.

During the Influenza (“the flu”) season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.
The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
