This recruitment is for (1) one 9-month non-permanent Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 position in the Fish Program, Hatchery Division. The duty station the Kendal Creek Hatchery located at 6263 Mt. Baker HWY, Deming, WA. 98244.
DutiesFish Culture;
Adult fish handling
Feeds fish their calculated daily ration;
Pond cleaning
Collecting, sorting, and spawning of adult and juvenile salmon.
Vacuuming and pressure washing the ponds for cleaning
Egg and fish sampling and picking, this includes weighing and counting salmon eggs and removing deformities and egg mortalities. (these duties require long periods of standing, careful attention to detail and protocols in often cold temperatures.)
Recordkeeping and Reporting
Enters data into forms and spreadsheets, demonstrates proficiency with computerized forms and accuracy (e.g. fish mortality, feed sheets, feed inventory, and chemical usage);
Operation and Maintenance of Equipment
Tasks include:
Cleaning adult handling area, vehicles and hatchery buildings and bathrooms
Weed eating, raking, weeding hatchery grounds
Small equipment repair and maintenance.
Public Contact and Communications
Responds to/answers questions from visitors to the facility.
Conducts organized tours
Interacts with the public in a polite, professional manner.
Identifies the best way to respond when faced with difficult-to-answer questions or when information is not readily obtainable.
Follow-up to ensure that an answer was obtained.
Working Conditions
40 hours Monday to Friday 8:00-4:30 or 10 days on for day off and typically work is 5 – 8 hour days per week, depending on the time of year; includes days, nights, weekends and holidays as needed. Ability to lift 50 lbs, work out doors in all weather conditions and perform strenuous physical activities. Public interaction as well as interaction with co-managers and other regulatory agencies required. This position requires a valid driver’s license.

These positions are in the bargaining unit represented by the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Hatchery Professionals and is subject to the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish & Wildlife, and the Washington Association of Fish Hatchery Professionals (WAFHP).
QualificationsOne year of experience of Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 OR Associate’s degree in fisheries technology or closely allied field; OR Three years of education towards a Bachelor’s degree in fisheries or closely allied field. OR Successful completion of a fish culture program from a vocational school. OR Three years of experience performing a variety of fish culture duties in a hatchery will substitute for the required education.
