We are seeking a PhD-level graduate student interested in forest ecosystem ecology to join a newly established research project in the Southern Appalachian mixed-oak forests. The PhD student will be co-advised by Jodi Forrester at North Carolina State University and Tara Keyser at Bent Creek Experimental Forest. The student will join a larger collaborative team of ecophysiologists and landscape modelers focused on comparing widely used and newly applied management approaches for regenerating oak and hickory and restoring ecological complexity in the Southern Appalachians. The student’s research will span from tree species physiological responses to canopy openings to forest carbon storage and exchange.

The position is available for spring or summer 2020 and includes four years of funding (with some expectation of teaching assistantships). It is based at NC State in Raleigh, but involves significant field work near Bent Creek Experimental Forest in Asheville, NC.

Qualifications: MS in ecosystem ecology, forest biology, plant ecophysiology, or a related field. Applicants should have strong quantitative skills or genuine interest in developing these skills.

Application: Interested applicants should send their cover letter summarizing relevant experience and interests, CV, and contact information for three references. Send application materials and questions to: Jodi Forrester  (Jodi_forrester@ncsu.edu)
