The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) currently has a full-time opportunity for a Water Quality Standards Specialist (Natural Resource Specialist 3) in Portland, Oregon.

The Water Quality Division has a critical role in achieving the Department’s mission by developing policy, implementation tools, and implementation priorities for improving and protecting the quality of water in Oregon’s waterways. The Water Quality Division works cooperatively with the Department’s three regional offices and the Laboratory to deliver programs and services that protect and enhance the quality of the waters of the state to protect public health and the environment.
What you will do!
The Water Quality Standards Specialist participates as a member of the water quality standards team. You will serve as an expert and project team member or project lead for conducting research and data analysis for water quality standards review and rulemaking projects. You will evaluate data related to water uses and water quality. Finally, you will write documents summarizing scientific information; prepare documents; develop and make presentations to the public; and assist with rulemaking processes, stakeholder involvement, and public hearings.

This is a full-time, AFSCME represented position.
What are we looking for?
- Bachelor’s degree in a physical science, environmental science, or closely related field, AND 3 years of experience in a natural resource or environmental field (an equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable).
- Experience compiling and analyzing data, information, and reports to evaluate water quality conditions.
- Experience developing analyses to support water quality standards revisions.
- Experience conducting general research and literature reviews related to the development, implementation, and/or revision of water quality criteria and standards.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as project management/coordination skills; skill and experience interpreting and communicating complex technical natural resource information to a variety of audiences.
- Experience working with stakeholders and the general public to solicit their review and comment, and to evaluate and respond to their comment.
- Experience reading, understanding, interpreting, and applying water quality regulations or other environmental regulations.
