Green Communities Canada invites qualified applicants who meet the eligibility requirements of the Eco Canada – Science Horizon Youth Employment Program (http://www.eco.ca/employment-programs/youth-placement/science-horizons/) to take on the role of Coordinator in its Water Department.
Location: Peterborough, ON
Salary: $26,560 plus benefits (based on an annual salary of $33,150 prorated to 0.8 time- 30 hrs/week).

In Green Communities Canada’s water department, you’ll work with a senior manager to implement programs which transform the way rain water is managed on the landscape (see Depave Paradise and Rain Community Solutions). You’ll get a chance to work on many aspects of program development and implementation. As well, you will have the opportunity to contribute your own ideas and creativity to addressing environmental challenges.

Green Communities Canada is a national network of community-based environmental organisations that deliver innovative and practical community programs.
Our current programs address home energy efficiency, green infrastructure approaches to stormwater management, and active school travel.
GCC is a national non-profit, based in Peterborough, Ontario, with staff in Ottawa, Toronto, and Hamilton. We have a 12-member national board of directors, and 15 member organizations across the country.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the senior manager, Water Department, and with their assistance and mentorship, the successful candidate will:
- Coordinate support for RAIN Community Solutions (http://www.raincommunitysolutions.ca) and Depave Paradise (http://www.depaveparadise.ca) team and partners.
- Assist with project planning, implementation, communication, evaluation and reporting.
- Track results in shared spreadsheets and create visually appealing infographics and videos to demonstrate and communicate success.
- Coordinate and write an e-bulletin and social media to share information and project ideas that demonstrate methods of restoring the natural water cycle in urban and rural areas to protect water quality and quantity.
- Expand and share knowledge on the following topics:
- Rainwater harvesting
- Common contaminants and best practices for pollution prevention
- Building and designing permeable landscapes (depaving, rain gardens, infiltration galleries, permeable paving)
- Removing impermeable surfaces and replacing with green space
- Protecting homes from flood damage
- Assist with event coordination and promotion.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:
- A degree in a related field including hydrogeology, environmental sciences, biology, water sciences, landscape architecture, engineering, Indigenous environmental science or physical geography.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Commitment to the environment as demonstrated through previous volunteer commitments and/or employment.
- Knowledge of water protection and urban hydrogeology issues.
- Experience working with First Nations and an understanding of Indigenous Traditional Knowledge is not required but an asset.
- Skills in design, social media and video-making are definite assets.

Funding Eligibility Requirements
- 30 years of age or younger, Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or have refugee status.
- Currently unemployed or underemployed.
- Able to work full-time.
- Intend to lead an environmental career in STEM or natural resources.
- Have not previously participated in a federal youth employment program.
- Graduated from a recognized post-secondary institution with a 2 year diploma or 4 year degree.

- This is a 12-month, 30hr a week, full-time position.
