Supplemental Description – Wildlife Biologist II – Pine Creek Biologist #708218

JOB SUMMARY

The Biologist II position is assigned to the monitoring of habitat recovery and project development on the rugged and remote Pine Creek Conservation Area, near Clarno, Oregon. This position will work closely with the Conservation Area Project Leader at Pine Creek, assisting as needed on property management activities.   Duty Station will be in the Warm Springs BNR office, which is about 60 miles from Pine Creek.

Responsibilities:

The Wildlife Biologist II position will monitor resources at the 34,000-acre property. Monitoring includes, but is not limited to, photopoints, vegetation plots, game counts, steelhead spawning surveys, road surveys, stream flow data, bird surveys, weed mapping, biota inventories, GIS database development, fencing, livestock trespass, and other duties as assigned. Writing a new land management plan, grants for restoration projects, program narrative, and contributing to annual reports are primary responsibilities of the position. Assisting in property management such as issuing hunting access permits, managing kiosks, supervising contracts, conducting weed control work, planting and seeding work, and other work duties with the Conservation Area Project Leader as assigned.

Game counts surveys may require flight time annually in helicopter or fixed-wing aircraft.

Supervisory Duties:

There are no staff or subordinates for this position, but the position may supervise technicians or contractors funded through the program as it relates to monitoring work or in assistance to the Project Leader.

Successful Performance Requirements:

The Wildlife Biologist will work independently, with little supervision, in developing and administering biological and physical monitoring activities on the property, maintain professional working relationships with other staff, agencies, and organizations, communicate effectively to staff and BNR managers, possess strong organizational skills for maintaining accurate and up to date records, understand various wildlife habitats of the lower John Day River basin, and be able to present projects to diverse groups of people in formal and informal settings.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

Education & Experience:

• A Bachelor of Science degree in wildlife, biology, or closely related area is required. Three years of professional experience in wildlife management, habitat monitoring, land management, or similar field.

Knowledge & Skills sought:

• Knowledge wildlife habitat in the John Day River watershed and those sensitive, threatened and endangered species that need them; ideally bird identification skills
• Skill at working independently, with little supervision to develop and run a program while professionally representing the Tribes.
• Knowledge and skills in GIS and map making
• Database management and development skills
• Grant writing abilities and experience
• Developing and implementing land management plan
• Able to use office applications and software for reports, grants, and contracts

Requirements:

• Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent
• Ability to traverse rough and steep terrain in variable weather carrying field gear and collection equipment.
• Ability to lifting up to 50 lbs.
• Must be able and comfortable working alone in extremely remote, rugged desert wilderness, often without cellular service.
• Requires a valid Oregon driver’s license and insurance.

Compensation:

Starting salary range of $39,000 to $44,000, DOE; with grade range up to $51,445.  The Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Reservation of Oregon offer insurance and 401k package.
