DESCRIPTION:
The Forester I performs technical forestry work in the office and field on a project basis or with an assigned set of responsibilities. The start date for this position is January 1, 2020.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
  1. Conducts land examination surveys in plantations, reproduction stands, and timber stands to collect necessary data to formulate forest management treatments.
  2. Assists other department personnel in such projects as: timber cruising, surveying, marking timber sale boundaries, marking riparian leave areas, laying out roads for construction, and other tasks as needed.
  3. Audits tree-planting crews.
  4. Performs post-thinning surveys to monitor stocking and spacing as well as tree selection.
  5. Other duties as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:

  1. High school diploma or GED.
  2. Bachelor’s Degree with major study in Forestry Field, or an Associate degree in Forest Technology together with a minimum of two years’ experience as a Forest Technician with a forest management firm or agency.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Working knowledge of the theory, policy, principles, and practices of the forestry profession as applied to forests of the Pacific Northwest.
  2. Working knowledge of the fundamentals of cruising methods, reforestation, and logging systems.
  3. Must be familiar with the State of Washington Forest Practices Act and the corresponding Forest Practices Rules.
  4. Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relations with office staff, County departments and officials, outside agencies and the general public.
  5. Ability to orient, climb, and traverse steep rugged, densely vegetated terrain on a consistent basis in sometimes harsh weather conditions.
  6. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  7. Ability to interpret and explain county policies and procedures.
  8. Ability to work independently and with minimal oversight.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Experience working with and managing a tree planting crew, which would include auditing for planting quality and spacing.
  2. Experience working with a pre-commercial thinning crew, which would include auditing for leave tree selection and spacing.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES & REGISTRATIONS

  • A valid Washington State Driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid, CPR, and Defensive Driving certifications.

Work may be performed in an office setting or in the field with exposure to inclement weather conditions, construction sites, and heavy equipment.
