DESCRIPTION: |
The Forester I performs technical forestry work in the office and field on a project basis or with an assigned set of responsibilities. The start date for this position is January 1, 2020. |
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: |
- Conducts land examination surveys in plantations, reproduction stands, and timber stands to collect necessary data to formulate forest management treatments.
- Assists other department personnel in such projects as: timber cruising, surveying, marking timber sale boundaries, marking riparian leave areas, laying out roads for construction, and other tasks as needed.
- Audits tree-planting crews.
- Performs post-thinning surveys to monitor stocking and spacing as well as tree selection.
- Other duties as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS: |
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Bachelor’s Degree with major study in Forestry Field, or an Associate degree in Forest Technology together with a minimum of two years’ experience as a Forest Technician with a forest management firm or agency.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Working knowledge of the theory, policy, principles, and practices of the forestry profession as applied to forests of the Pacific Northwest.
- Working knowledge of the fundamentals of cruising methods, reforestation, and logging systems.
- Must be familiar with the State of Washington Forest Practices Act and the corresponding Forest Practices Rules.
- Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relations with office staff, County departments and officials, outside agencies and the general public.
- Ability to orient, climb, and traverse steep rugged, densely vegetated terrain on a consistent basis in sometimes harsh weather conditions.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to interpret and explain county policies and procedures.
- Ability to work independently and with minimal oversight.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working with and managing a tree planting crew, which would include auditing for planting quality and spacing.
- Experience working with a pre-commercial thinning crew, which would include auditing for leave tree selection and spacing.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES & REGISTRATIONS
- A valid Washington State Driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
- Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid, CPR, and Defensive Driving certifications.
