Full-Time/Non-permanent
Fish Hatchery Specialist 2

This recruitment is a 4-month non-permanent Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 in the Fish Program, Hatchery Division. The duty station is 17619 316th NE, Arlington, WA 98223.  Anticipated start date is February 3, 2020.DutiesFish Culture
Task Include:
Feeds fish their calculated daily ration;
Monitors fish behavior, health,
Monitors egg and fish production;
Administers therapeutants, calculates and administers drugs as prescribed
Cleans ponds and raceways, troughs, and incubator systems to maintain fish health
Collects fish tissue and fluid samples and record’s data
Performs fish inventories, splits, grading, marking trailer inventories, weight samples and plants.

Recordkeeping and Reporting
Tasks include:
Enters data into forms and spreadsheets (e.g. fish mortality, feed sheets, feed inventory, and chemical usage);
Fill out standard report forms
Accurately fills out agency forms such as fish transfer tickets, hatchery invoice tickets, etc.
Submits complete and accurate forms required.
Assist in developing in-house forms as required.

Operation and Maintenance of Facility
Tasks include:
Monitors water flow and quality parameters; takes water samples and readings (e.g. dissolved gases, suspended settleable solids, and other parameters as required)
Maintains proper water flow and rearing environments;
Responds to alarms; monitors and maintains facility support systems;
Actively identifies safety hazards and takes action or recommends remedies as appropriate.

Tasks include:
Drive a non CDL planting truck to and from planting sites
Organizes and maintains hatchery tools, equipment, and grounds
Communicates safety concerns in a timely manner to (management to staff and staff to management), Uses tools and equipment properly and safely.

Public Contact and Communications
Tasks include:
Responds to questions from visitors to the facility
Conducts organized tours
Interacts with the public in a polite professional manner
Identifies the best way to respond with difficult-to-answer questions or when information is not readily obtainable.
Follow-up to ensure that an answer was obtained.

Working Conditions
Due to the nature and remoteness of this position working hours can vary according to what is happening at the facility on any particular day, for the most part the job is an 8-hour day from 8-4:30 p.m.  Standby is assigned to this position. This position will operate on a Monday through Friday schedule normally with an occasional 10 day on 4 days off schedule when in the standby rotation.  Travel may be required for short periods to accomplish agency goals and required training.  Employee will interact with small community groups and individual constituents on a regular basis who visit the hatchery grounds to answer questions and give tours.

Typically, the employee in this position will be working outside about 250 days a year and usually based on the remoteness of the facility will be working by her/himself for about half of this time.  This employee will be required in all sorts of weather condition whether it be rain, snow, or shine.  Due to the sometimes strenuous nature of this fish hatchery Specialist 2 position the employee will be required to lift at least 50lbs for a undisclosed amount of time throughout a day.  Employee with also be required to work in and out of wet, dirty, slippery conditions.  Will work with hand tools and power tools.  A valid drivers license is required.  Standby has been assigned and there is no housing available to facilitate the standby requirement.

These positions are in the bargaining unit represented by the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Hatchery Professionals and is subject to the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish & Wildlife, and the Washington Association of Fish Hatchery Professionals (WAFHP).

QualificationsGraduation from High School or GED.   Preferred work experience in a hatchery setting.

Knowledge and Abilities Desired:
1. Basic computer skills, familiarity with Microsoft Outlook and Excel software.
2. Basic fish culture techniques; rearing procedures
3. Water dynamics  (e.g. flows, flow patterns, availability, temperature, etc)
4. Calibration of specialized instruments (e.g. scales, Dissolved Oxygen meters)
5. Basic math; calculate and understand quantities and proportions
6. Ability to work out of doors in all weather conditions and perform strenuous physical activities.
7. Safe and proper use and maintenance of tools and equipment.
