Job IRC77692: Computational Earth Science Post-Master’s Student Internship
What You Will Do
The Computational Earth Science Group (EES-16; www.lanl.gov/EES-16 ) in the Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is looking for an individual with a Master’s degree in Earth Science, Physical Science, Engineering, Applied Math or a related STEM field. The position would be a one-year term with the possibility of extension to two years.
Los Alamos National Laboratory’s EES-16 Group focuses on a broad array of energy, environmental, and national security challenges including:
  • Energy: carbon sequestration, geothermal energy, wind energy, unconventional oil & gas, energy-water nexus, nuclear energy, energy storage, and energy infrastructure.
  • Environment: groundwater simulation and hydrogeology, climate impacts and extreme events, surface hydrology, atmosphere interactions, urban and wildland fire, and environmental remediation.
  • National & global security: non-proliferation, and regional instability.
The Computational Earth Science Group addresses these challenges using multiple computational techniques and simulation tools including computational fluid dynamics (CFD), machine learning, reduced-order modeling, massively parallel high performance computing (HPC), data analytics, physics-based models of the environment, hydrological models, GIScience/GIS, and operations research/optimization. The Group’s research includes both fundamental and applied science ranging from subsurface to atmospheric phenomena, including collaboration with experimentalists to measure unique subsurface, surface, and atmospheric signatures.
The successful applicant will be expected to work as a member of our team and assist staff in carrying out a broad spectrum of tasks related to ongoing projects. In particular, the candidate will be expected to set-up and run a process-based model to identify important parameters involved in the conversion of food waste to energy. It is expected that the candidate will lead a publication based on this work under the guidance of several other team members who are involved on the project.
 
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Demonstrated experience in setup, execution, monitoring, and/or postprocessing physics-based process models for science or engineering applications.
  • Demonstrated fluency in one or more programming languages (e.g. Python, R, C++, C, Julia, Fortran, Matlab, Mathematica).
  • Demonstrated familiarity with Linux-based, Windows, and Mac operating systems.
 
Desired Skills:
  • Understanding of reactive chemistry
  • Understanding of parameter optimization and parameter sensitivity analysis
  • Understanding of biofuel/bioenergy conversion processes
  • Understanding of computational modeling
  • Experience in software development as a member of a software development team
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance. To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age. U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
 
Education level and eligibility requirements:
  • Master’s degree in Physical or Natural Science, Engineering, Applied Mathematics or related STEM field.
  • Eligibility is limited to students who have completed their Master’s Degree within the past three (3) years, and have not yet been accepted into another degree program.

Additional Details:
