Intern Program Coordinator to support the development and launch of a collaborative approach to youth employment in Portland-Vancouver.  The Refuge System seeks to engage and inspire people who live in urban areas to become part of a conservation constituency, so that together we can leave a legacy of abundant and healthy wildlife and wild lands for future generations of Americans to enjoy.  The Program Coordinator will play a key role in creating meaningful nature-based internship/employment opportunities (on wildlife refuges and in communities) for diverse and underserved local youth on their paths to becoming future conservation leaders.

Major duties include:

  • Coordinating communication between national wildlife refuge staff and inaugural youth employment partners (Student Conservation Association and Hispanic Access Foundation) to collaboratively design program
  • Communicating with target communities and partners (e.g. LatinX, Indigenous, people with disabilities) to determine needs and interests of local youth
  • Developing program framework and guidance
  • Developing position descriptions that tie community conservation efforts with local national wildlife refuges
  • Developing recruitment tools, onboarding processes, training materials and mentorship strategies
  • Assisting with recruitment and support of youth interns
  • Creating reports, keeping records, coordinating with staff and and partners

As we build our efforts to deepen relationships of underserved populations and be a community asset, we are seeking applicants who can help us achieve an inclusive youth internship program.  The ideal candidate would have:

  • strong communication and organizational skills
  • ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • a passion for connecting people with nature
  • a desire to take on a leadership role
  • experience working with diverse communities, especially within the Portland-Vancouver metropolitan area
  • ability to speak Spanish
  • a minimum of a bachelor’s degree

Other info:

  • The position requires a minimum of 32 hours per week.
  • The position requires a valid driver’s license, intermittent weekend or evening work.
  • While on duty, a government vehicle may be provided.  Public transportation fares can be reimbursed for on-duty travel.
  • The position will support the work of the USFWS throughout the Portland-Vancouver metropolitan area. Office space is available at national wildlife refuges and at key locations throughout the metro area.

Compensation amounts:

  • $600 – weekly living allowance
  • $50 – weekly commuting allowance
  • $500 – reimbursable Duty Travel funding
    *All allowances subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes

  • Development opportunities, depending on member needs, may include: diversity, equity and inclusion training; networking with a wide variety of partners; assisting habitat staff and/or communication and education staff; and networking within USFWS.
