Responsibilities

As a Biological Science Technician (Wildlife) within the Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

• Conducts field studies and surveys to collect wildlife data and/or specimens.
• Conducts a variety of data manipulation and analyses such as compiling and tabulating data and other resource management information, including research and long-term monitoring projects.
• Coordinates repair and maintenance of research and support equipment such as tools, traps, and sampling, monitoring, photographic and laboratory equipment.
• Compiles, analyzes and summarizes field and lab data for preparation of final reports and publications.
• Operates a government vehicle as an incidental driver.

Above duties are for the GS-07 level. For the lower grade levels, the incumbent will perform a wide range of tasks described in the above duties, but at a lower level of work designed to further develop and refine the knowledge and skills of the incumbent. Assignments will typically combine productive work with on-going training and instruction. Supervision received at the lower grade level will be closer with oversight and review being provided more frequently.

Physical Demands: The work requires physical exertion such as, regular and recurring running, walking, bending, or climbing ladders or scaffolds to observe, collect, or record data.

Work Environment: The work environment varies from the laboratory setting to field sites and offices. The work involves moderate risks and discomforts, such as high noise levels and exposure to chemicals, adverse weather conditions, and extreme temperatures that may require following special safety procedures.

Field work requires overnight travel and camping of up to 20 nights a month, and may also expose the incumbent to stinging insects, rattlesnakes, and other wildlife.
