Sound Salmon Solutions (SSS) is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit that was founded in 1990. SSS serves as the Regional Fisheries Enhancement Group (RFEG) for the Stillaguamish, Snohomish, and Island County watersheds in Washington State. We nurture the relationships between people and our wild spaces to support salmon recovery through interactive education, hands-on stewardship, and state-of-the-art habitat restoration.
POSITION TITLE: Habitat Restoration Technician
ANTICIPATED START DATE: April 27, 2020
ANTICIPATED END DATE: November 30, 2020
COMPENSATION: $16.50/hour + paid time off, employer paid medical benefit options, and professional development stipend
LOCATION: Office located in Mukilteo with daily work throughout our RFEG area
HOURS: 40 hours per week, Monday-Thursday 7 AM – 5:30 PM with occasional weekend work
POSITION SUMMARY: Implement field-based riparian restoration efforts independently, as a team, and under the supervision of the Habitat Program Manager, Habitat Specialist, and any project partners to improve water and habitat quality and quantity. Restoration efforts typically include: controlling invasive species, installing native plants, vegetation monitoring, site maintenance, and assisting at volunteer events. QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience in environmental field work, including invasive weed management
- Ability to identify PNW native and non-native vegetation
- Commitment and cooperation to work with team members
- Strong situational awareness, leadership, attention to detail, and sense of humor
- Experience operating tools and power equipment
- Ability to work in all weather conditions
- Ability to lift up to 40lbs
- Ability to operate 4-wheel drive vehicles and tow trailers
- Valid Driver’s License and Insurance
- WSDA pesticide license holder preferred
JOB TASKS:
- Assist with the construction of riparian restoration projects including planting, soil erosion control, installation of exclusion fencing, and other general construction activities
- Perform invasive weed surveys in and along rivers and streams
- Control and remove invasive and noxious weeds from project sites using mechanical and chemical methods
- Perform annual site maintenance activities and other tasks on project sites such as: mowing grass and removing blackberry using walk-behind field mowers, gas-powered brushcutters, ATV, tractors, and hand tools as assigned
- Collect, manage, and summarize field data using GPS units and tablets.
- Maintain a daily record of activities and prepare site reports as requested.
- Keep workspaces safe, clean, and organized
- Maintain and repair tools and equipment
- Effectively communicate with SSS Staff, landowners, partner organizations, and the public about restoration work and salmon recovery efforts
- Attend and assist with outreach and volunteer events as needed
- Attend necessary training and testing sessions
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Keep abreast policies, protocols, safety standards and daily tasks by attending staff meetings, communicating with supervisors, and reading emails and manuals offered by supervisors.
- Perform assigned tasks to the standards offered by SSS staff, manuals, and training sessions.
- Operate equipment safely and effectively at all times, taking care to know safety guidelines of each instrument before use.
- Communicate with SSS supervisors and/or crew members any field related or pertinent information including equipment needs, interpersonal difficulties, comfort level with tasks, concerns for safety, interactions with landowners, etc. in a timely manner.
- Understand limitations in the field and executing tasks to the best of your ability.
- Come prepared to work each day with a positive attitude.
