The Capital and Asset Management Program within the Department of Fish and Wildlife is looking to fill two (2) Biology – Administrative Intern 1 positions. These opportunities are located in Olympia, WA and the anticipated appointment length is 3½ Months. Start and end dates are flexible to coincide with school schedules, as needed. This internship can be used to fulfill credits for graduation, if requested.
Duties
- Assist lead permitting staff in fish removals and sampling work areas.
- Perform seining, sampling, and removal of aquatic species from active construction areas. This includes cataloging and maintaining accurate records.
- Perform environmental and water sampling in support of maintaining good water quality and site conditions, including pH, turbidity, and dissolved oxygen, or other site samples.
Working Conditions:
- Work Setting, including hazards: Substantial time at various field locations throughout Washington under adverse environmental conditions. The ability to work in water and carry 40 pounds on uneven terrain. Work on active construction sites including around large equipment.
- Schedule: Variable hours ranging from 0 to 40 hours per week and alternative work schedules including overnight stays are likely (reimbursed at the state approved rate for per diem and lodging rates).
- Travel Requirements: This position requires substantial field time and travel throughout Washington. Long field days and some overnight stays are likely (reimbursed at the state approved rate for per diem and lodging rates).
- Tools and Equipment: Ability to operate pickup trucks. Ability to operate standard laboratory equipment including water quality probes. Ability to record accurate and legible field notes by hand or digital devices. Ability to operate a digital camera including download to computer.
QualificationsRequired Qualifications:
- High School Diploma/GED AND currently a college student (enrolled and pursuing a degree at an institution of higher education) majoring in Biology, environmental studies, or natural resource related degree at time of application.
- A valid driver’s license.
- Ability to work in water and carry 40 pounds over uneven terrain.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Highly motivated.
- Working knowledge of MS Office package including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Pursuing a degree in natural resource management, fisheries, biology or similar discipline.
