DutiesStream flow monitoring
Tasks include:

• Monitor stream flow and collect water chemistry data related to stream flow augmentation projects.
• Assist in monitoring Eastern WA Water Team trust water rights transactions  within Washington’s sixteen critical basins.
• Install, monitor, and operate staff gages and pressure transducers.
• Assist Water Team staff and associated habitat to flow relationship studies.
• Enter data collected during the sampling periods into the Water Team’s monitoring database.
• Provide assistance for stream flow monitoring needs to other division and program staff.

Habitat and habitat simulation model field sampling
Tasks include:

• Conduct field habitat measurements in streams throughout the state.
• Interpret, understand, and accurately follow work procedures.
• Carefully and accurately observe and record the condition and quality of salmonid habitat.

Fish sampling efforts
Tasks include:

• Use various fish sampling methods, to include but not limited to; electrofishing, seine net, and snorkel surveys.
• Accurately identify juvenile and adult salmonids in the field.
• Redd surveys wading streams in upper Kittitas County.
• Record detailed observations and data entry of fish sampling efforts.

GIS Mapping through ArcMap 10.1
Tasks include:

• Creation of maps in GIS to display information collected in the field.
• Creation of trust water rights maps for monitoring efforts.
• Creation of maps to display stream flow needs for native salmonids.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Standard business hours are Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but the incumbent may be expected to adjust the work schedule to meet business needs. A flexible work schedule will be considered at the incumbent’s request, subject to supervisory approval.  A small portion of time will be spent in office conditions and the incumbent must be able to remain focused and courteous in a busy office environment.

Field work

• Daily travel to job sites in state vehicle.
• A valid unrestricted Washington state or other driver’s license is required.
• Must be willing and able to travel overnight for extended periods of time; including, but not limited to camping in remote wilderness areas.
• Much of the work will be alone and unsupervised, possibly in semi-remote locations.
• Frequent contact (likely daily) with clients, including some contact with those who may be angry, distraught, or frustrated. Only general public while conducting fieldwork.
• Conduct approximately 95% of work outside in potentially inclement weather at times. Flexible work schedule dictated by weather conditions.
• Hazards include but are not limited to; normal hazards associated with operating a motor vehicle on developed and undeveloped roads.
• Work will be conducted in rain, wind, hot/cold weather conditions, with exposure to possible insect bites and stings.
• Remoteness of work sites requires the person to be in good physical condition with the ability to walk several miles daily on uneven terrain.
• Frequent wading in rivers and streams is required, potentially during high flows.  Carry 40+ lbs. over uneven terrain with frequent bending, stooping, and climbing over rocks and slopes.
• Use or learn software such as Microsoft Office programs, Word, and Excel.
• Selected candidates will receive training for safety, agency policies and procedures, survey protocols, and species identification.

Qualifications

• Experience as a Scientific Technician 1.

OR

• Graduation from high school or GED including one year of high school science and two years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.

OR

• College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.

PREFERRED/DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team, physically helping others perform tasks in the field.
• Excellent verbal communication skills
• Attention to detail in collecting and compiling information into reports and forms.
• Interprets, understands, and accurately follows work procedures.
• Proficiency in the use of Arc GIS, Excel, Access, and Word is a plus. Ability to create maps in GIS to display information collected in the field.
• Knowledge of freshwater habitat requirements for anadromous and resident salmonids, and associated life histories.
• Ability to review and assess conditions which inhibit natural salmonid production.
• Carefully and accurately observes and records the condition and quality of salmonid habitat.
• Ability to identify juvenile and adult salmonids.
• Demonstrated ability to closely follow standard protocols and perform work under moderate to low supervision.
