Olympic Region – Forks and Port Angeles

This is a Washington Management Service Band 2, full-time, permanent position.
Olympic Region has an opportunity for an energetic and enthusiastic leader to join our team as the Assistant Region Manager – Wildfire and Forest Practices. This position assists and supports the Region Manager in implementing Region and Division objectives.
The Assistant Region Manager – Wildfire and Forest Practices is responsible for implementing agency policies and procedures, and for administering the Region’s Fire Management, Forest Practices, and Olympic Correctional Camp programs on approximately 1.5 million acres of public and private forestland within Olympic Region (Clallam, Jefferson, and north Grays Harbor counties).
In this role, you will you will apply excellent supervisory, organizational management, and communication skills to lead and coach diverse professional staff in our Wildfire, Forest Practices, and Olympic Camp sections. The right candidate has:
- A bachelor’s degree in Forest Management or Natural Resources Management or a related field; and six years of professional level experience with a demonstrated progression in leadership responsibilities in the areas of land and resource management, personnel management and wildfire suppression;
An associate’s degree in forest management or natural resources management or a related field; and eight years of professional level experience with a demonstrated progression in leadership responsibilities in the areas of land and resource management, personnel management and wildfire suppression.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Employees who drive for state business, whether in a state or privately-owned vehicle, are required to possess a valid license as defined in policy PO02-006 and abide by all other driver responsibility requirements. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
- Knowledge in personnel management principles and merit system rules.
- Knowledge of agency policies, practices and procedures.
- Skills in oral and written communication.
- Skills in staff month and dollar budget development.
- Skills in assessing training needs.
- Skills in agreement and contract negotiations.
Key Knowledge and Skills, Forestry, Fire and Camps
- Knowledge of forest management objectives, timber management planning and silvicultural principles.
- Experience implementing Washington Forest Practices rules, laws and practices and associated agency policies.
- Knowledge of logging and forest road construction practices.
- Experience with wildfire prevention and suppression practices and tactics.
- Skills in managing complex fire incidents.
- Knowledge of Department of Corrections’ policies, procedures and protocols relative to camp operations and inter-agency use of inmates on work crews.
These knowledge and skills are demonstrated through the ability of the incumbent to:

- Provide support to the Region Manager in carrying out Region and Division objectives.
- Provide second level-supervision over multiple work units with one or more supervisors.
