Pacific Cascade Region – Yacolt

This recruitment may be used to fill vacancies that occur over the next six months.
The Pacific Cascade Region is looking for a Forest Crew Supervisor – Correctional Facility (FCS-CF). This position supports the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Pacific Cascade region by training, supervising and leading a (10) ten person offender hand crew to manage, sustain and protect the health and productivity of Washington’s lands and waterways. This is accomplished by performing a variety of forestry and non-forestry related tasks. These include various silvicultural activities (tree planting, pre-commercial thinning, vegetation management), recreation, facility and site construction and maintenance, litter pickup and wildfire suppression. The safe and productive completion of work projects supports the DNR in fulfilling its mission in resource protection, trust land management and associated public service that build and sustains the Region’s capacity to carry out its functions. Leads approximately 10 offenders incarcerated at the Larch Corrections Center. Crews generally work four, ten-hour days per week for a total of 40 hours per week, except when working on emergency incidents (e.g. wildland fire) when longer workdays may be required.

The right candidate has:
- Experience in some or all of the following forest crafts which includes: Forest seedling planting, forest plantation, vegetation management, pre-commercial thinning, recreation trail and facilities construction and maintenance, chainsaw use and maintenance, hand tool use and maintenance and wildland fire suppression. Or
- Technical/professional forestry knowledge and skills which are acquired through the completion of a 2 or 4 year degree in forester management or closely related field, program or study.
- Six months supervisory experience either in an adult/juvenile correctional environment or a professional production based business.
- Teamwork and unfailing honesty are behavioral competencies that are critical to being able to successfully perform the essential functions listed above. Specifically working with offenders is challenging in that their behaviors are not always pro-social and are at time manipulative and divisive. In order to identify and address these behavioral traits it is imperative that the FCS work as a team with other FCS’s, DOC staff, and their supervisory chain so that these behaviors can be effectively and promptly dealt with when they arise.
- Successful candidates will be required to meet physical fitness standards for Arduous level wildfire suppression work. This requires passing a work capacity test by completing within 45 minutes a 3-mile hike carrying a 45-pound pack. Supervised tests are administered by the Department of Natural Resources. Offers of employment are contingent on passing the arduous level pack test. If hired before passing the pack test, failure to pass the test would result in termination of probationary employment. (For promotional candidates, failure would result in reversion from trial service employment).
- Ability to work on uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
- The incumbent in this position is required to travel.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Employees who drive for state business, whether in a state or privately-owned vehicle, are required to possess a valid license as defined in policy PO02-006 and abide by all other driver responsibility requirements. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
- Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant’s suitability and competence to perform in the position.
- Reside within one hour of Duty Station / Larch Camp. Close proximity to the work station will ensure an adequate response time to camp to meet wildfire deliverables of responding to local fires within one hour of dispatch.
- During the first year of employment, successful candidates must attain the level of Fire Fighter 2 (FF2) by attending one of three Wildland Fire Training Academies offered by an Interagency cooperative hosted by Washington State Department of Natural Resources.
- During the second year of employment, successful candidates must attend and pass S-131. Additionally, employees will be required to successfully complete the FF1/ICT5 with the timeframes allotted by the national standards set forth by the NWCG.
- To meet the NWCG qualifications of training Wildland Fire Fighters and after the successful completion of FF1, it will be expected that individuals will work towards fulfilling the required training of NWCG to meet the requirements as opportunity allows, of qualifying as a Single Resource Boss (SRB) as well as working towards the qualification of Intermediate Faller 2 (FAL2) as outlined in the Washington Department of Natural Resources Fire Training Handbook.
- Lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
- Applicants must be as least 18 years of age.
- Single Resource Boss fire line qualified.
- Technical/professional forestry knowledge and skills which are acquired through the completion of a 2 or 4 year degree in forest management or closely related programs of study.
- Held a position in a production based work unit in which the employee was held accountable for safety. Demonstrate the ability to use work time and resources effectively.
