Summary

This position is located within United States Department of Agricultural, Agricultural Research Service, Field Organization, Pacific West Area, Grain Legumes Unit, Pullman, WA.

This position involves one or more phases of a plant research process by performing a variety of complex technical duties, in a laboratory, field, or greenhouse environment, and contributes ideas towards the planning and sequencing of the technical aspects of the research.

Responsibilities

  • Collects, prepares, evaluates and verifies soil and plant samples and supporting records
  • Maintains and manages plants, seeds, and harvests crops, and field plots.
  • Maintains records and locates and compiles data and other information from various sources.
  • Obtain, tabulate, statistically analyze, and summarize data by graphic or other means.
  • Maintains, calibrates and modifies complex/specialized equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures.
  • Ability to operate farm equipment and machinery ? including Farm equipment, Tractors, Plot harvesters, Fertilizer equipment, Pesticide spraying equipment, and seeding equipment.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised.
GS-07:
Qualifying experience for GS-07 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-06 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in an experiment or research project related to soil or plants; collecting or evaluating samples related to soil and plants; and operating or maintaining field research equipment such as Farm equipment, Tractors, Plot harvesters, Fertilizer equipment, Pesticide spraying equipment, or seeding equipment.
OR
Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master’s or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include Crop science, Agronomy, Plant pathology, Soil science, Agricultural science, Plant sciences Biology, Botany, or Horticulture.
OR
A combination of graduate level education and specialized experience as described above.

GS-08:
Qualifying experience for GS-08 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting a research related to soil or plants; collecting or evaluating samples related to soil and plant; operating and maintaining scientific field research equipment such as Farm equipment, Tractors, Plot harvesters, Fertilizer equipment, Pesticide spraying equipment, or seeding equipment; and recording and analyzing scientific data.
OR
Education: Two full years of graduate level education or a Master’s degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include Crop science, Agronomy, Plant pathology, Soil science, Agricultural science, Plant sciences Biology, Botany, or Horticulture.
OR
A combination of graduate level education and specialized experience as described above.
