Job description

The drylands of the Horn of Africa are extremely vulnerable to droughts, which often lead to food insecurity and associated economic losses. Climate change may increase the frequency and intensity of these extreme events, and makes politically unstable regions in East Africa more vulnerable to conflict, terrorism, and mass migration, with far-reaching impacts on society and the environment. Rural communities in the Horn of Africa (Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia) tend to have low socio-economic levels and low adaptive capacity to climatic shocks, such that recent severe droughts have dramatically increased food insecurity from ~7 million people in 2011 to ~35 million people in 2017, leading to livestock loss and major water shortages.

Despite the proliferation of improved climate information for the region, and resulting improvements in early warnings, major uncertainties remain about the links between key seasonal climate variables, droughts and the consequential impacts to livelihoods and wellbeing. The European-funded DOWN2EARTH project will assess critical research gaps within dryland regions including i) how climate change affects the characteristics of rainfall and groundwater storage, ii) how the evolution of hydrological processes will impact the people who depend on them, and (iii) how communities can best adapt to drought risk.

This PhD project will focus on the adaptation dynamics of rural communities to droughts by developing an agent based model (ABM). An ABM is very effective in simulating how households respond to drought (under climate change), while taking into account climatic, hydrologic, and socio-economic variables. First, a conceptual model of the coupled water-human interactions will be designed based on existing data, theories and assumptions. Then, the PhD will collaborate with other PhDs in the project based at IVM to gather the physical, socio-economic, drought impact, and adaptation data needed for the model. The PhD will integrate these different data in the ABM to simulate the interactions between drought risk, its direct and indirect impacts, and how farmers respond to drought with adaptation measures (e.g irrigation, land use change, migration). The ABM then allows testing of possible future scenarios / storylines of drought risk and management under climate change to develop the most successful strategies and policies for climate adaptation and resilience.

To address the complexity of all these processes, the PhD will work with other PhDs in a multi-disciplinary team composed of experts and specialists in social science, economy, media communication, climate science, meteorology, environment, hydrology, remote sensing, computer science.

Your duties

  • setting up an agent based model to simulate drought adaptation dynamics in Eastern Africa over the last decades
  • developing the model using drought impact data, information on land & water use and management, and field survey data, collected together with other PhDs and partners in the region
  • analysing dynamics of adaptation and how farmers respond to extreme droughts
  • exploring temporal dynamics of human-drought feedbacks, with focus on dynamic adaptation and vulnerability, validating these with historic events and trends
  • applying the agent based model for simulating future climate adaptation for different climate change and socio-economic scenarios

Requirements

  • a Master’s degree in Human and/or Physical Geography, Quantitative Social Science, Earth Sciences, Hydrology, Civil/Environmental Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computational Science or a related field
  • strong willingness to learn agent based modelling and involvement in social science research (e.g. surveys). Need for quantitative data-assessment and programming (preferably in Python, or willing to learn Python)
  • strong collaboration and communication skills to work in a larger team of researchers from other disciplines involved in international research projects

What are we offering?

A challenging position in a socially involved organisation. The salary will be in accordance with university regulations for academic personnel and amounts €2,325 (PhD) per month during the first year and increases to €2,972 (PhD) per month during the fourth year, based on a full-time employment. The job profile: is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for at least 0.8 FTE.

The appointment will initially be for 1 year. After a satisfactory evaluation of the initial appointment, the contract will be extended for a duration of 3 years.
