About the positions…
Two permanent, full time positions in Portland, OR. The positions are career ladder with the full performance level at a GS-06.
These positions are with the Data Collection Team of the PNW Research Station’s Resource Monitoring and Assessment (RMA) Program, Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) unit. The FIA unit is part of a nationwide program which collects, processes, analyzes, evaluates, and publishes comprehensive information on forest and other related renewable resources. Administration for the Data Collection team is located in Portland, Oregon and field crews are remotely stationed throughout Washington, Oregon and California. These positions support the field staff by preparing forest inventory plot materials.
The Prefield Forestry Technicians are responsible for tracking, filing, and maintaining over 35,000 forest inventory field plot files. This position researches, assembles and prepares materials for field research work by using databases of historical information and by creating aerial images and maps using ArcGIS software. The incumbents will review plot information for land conditions and interpret land conditions using aerial imagery. These position also assists in the coordination and maintenance of the National Ownership Management database, including data input, record keeping, data retrieval, and correspondence.
These positions are nonsupervisory and work under the direct supervision of the Prefield Coordinator.
We are looking for individuals who:
•Have knowledge of forest sampling methods and recording procedures.
•Have the ability to assess land use and forest conditions using aerial imagery.
•Have knowledge of database software to enter, query, and manage data.
•Have knowledge of ArcGIS software to generate aerial imagery and maps.
•Have knowledge of computer applications and technology to produce correspondence, reports, and spreadsheets.
•Has the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in order to coordinate work and to write reports that accurately describe on-the-ground conditions.
