JOB SUMMARY:

The role of the Environmental Specialist is to assist in the implementation of the Treaty, Lands and Resources Department environmental programs, and managing specific projects pertaining to the lands and waters of the Tsleil-Waututh territory.

The Environmental Specialist is responsible for the following:

  • Support TWN field science and data collection programs, including shellfish surveys, habitat mapping, juvenile contamination sampling, and other field work in TWN territory
  • Support management of environmental data in TWN’s Treaty, Lands and Resources department
  • Assess potential impacts that proposed development projects and policy changes may have on Tsleil-Waututh’s Aboriginal rights, title, and interests
  • Facilitate TWN elk hunt and wildlife management initiatives
  • Facilitate TWN clam harvest and bivalve management initiatives
  • Support TWN’s Food Fish program distribution
  • Support TWN’s Cumulative Effects Monitoring Initiative
  • General support for TWN’s Lands, Water and Environment programs
  • Community and cultural event support

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Works collaboratively and provides support on TLR projects.
  • Plans and coordinates specific field work and data collection programs, ensuring the work meets requirements of specific funding agreements.
  • Assists in reporting on activities to satisfy appropriate funding requirements.
  • Reviews, drafts and edits departmental, program and project reports and documentation as required.
  • Assists with TLR’s data management processes.
  • Assists with the implementation and delivery of other departments’ initiatives as directed.
  • Assists with communications and community outreach (internally and externally).
  • Assists with fisheries crew field work if needed.
  • Coordinates and supports delivery and on-ground logistics of the TWN Food Fish program, the TWN Elk Harvest, and in expanding traditional food programs.
  • Assists and supports the planning and implementation of community events.
  • Attends related workshops and First Nation organization forums, as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A post-secondary degree in sciences or related environmental field, or three years relevant experience.
  • May consider alternate combinations of education and relevant work experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with ability to communicate effectively with personnel at

all organizational levels.

  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle projects or assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Brings a creative and unconventional approach to problem solving (ability to think outside the box).
  • Proficient with computers, the Internet and Microsoft Office Programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment under pressure; demonstrate flexibility, cooperation and ability to shift priorities rapidly.
  • Experience working in both office and field settings.
  • Previous experience working in a First Nations community and/or organization is an asset.
  • Demonstrates flexibility, cooperation, and the adaptability to changing priorities and working independently or as part of a team.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of BC indigenous cultures, and ability to work in a dynamic cross-cultural setting.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Physical Demands

  • Significant desk work with long periods of manual dexterity activities (keyboard operations, filing).
  • Occasional field work in variable weather.
  • Occasional field work in and around water (swift water and marine).
