About the Position
This is part-time, hourly position. The Education & Community Engagement Lead will be responsible for oversight of SHADOW’s education programs and community engagement activities. This includes creating and leading environmental education programs, planning seasonal community events, activities, and fieldtrips (in-person & virtual), coordinating with local teachers and school districts, and helping to connect the community to the Nature Preserve.
The ideal candidate is driven, well-organized and self-sufficient, with high emotional intelligence and a passion for environmental education.
Wage & Schedule
- Part-time: 5 – 15 hours/week
- $18/hour
- SHADOW’s work days are Tuesday – Saturday, schedule will vary depending on program schedule and weekly workload (most Fridays & Saturdays required). Some additional weekend and evening hours will be required with ample notice.
- Valid WA State Driver’s License and reliable transportation with current insurance are required. Position involves some local travel. Reimbursement is available for work related travel and parking expenses.

Roles & Responsibilities
Education & Community Engagement (65%)
- Help develop & modify SHADOW’s education programs to include virtual and video experiences directed towards K-12 classrooms, community groups, and families.
- Work with SHADOW’s education partners and local school districts to develop virtual and social distancing conscious education programs for K-12 classes.
- Coordinate and lead all SHADOW’s current education programing including in-person and virtual fieldtrips and community activities (minimal in-person events occurring during this time).
- Participate in the execution and planning of SHADOW’s major community engagement events.
Volunteer Management, Office Duties, & Grants (25%)
- Help recruit & oversee education and community engagement volunteers.
- Assist Executive Director with grant materials for education program and project funding.
- Respond to class registrations & education inquiries in a timely, professional manner.
- Ensure accurate data collection of program participation.
Outreach & Promotions (5 – 10%)
- Participate in digital and in-person outreach activities and events as assigned.
- Work with SHADOW’s Executive Director to promote and market education program & events.
Qualifications
- Associates degree or two years of college-level coursework in environmental studies/science or other relevant majors. 4-Year University degree preferred.
- One year of classroom and/or outdoor education experience is highly desired.
- Strong verbal and written communications skills.
- Comfortable creating digital content including videos and virtual education materials.
- Creative, self-motivated, self-starter – Applicant should be passionate about SHADOW Lake Nature Preserve’s mission and excited to explore creative ways to advance that mission.
- Proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment and strong time management skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to manage projects and groups.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
