North Coast – Sol Duc/Hoh (WRIA 20)

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is dedicated to preserving, protecting and perpetuating fish, wildlife and ecosystems, while providing sustainable recreational and commercial opportunities dependent on viable fish and wildlife populations.  WDFW employees protect and restore critical habitat, strive to facilitate species recovery when necessary, and manage hundreds of fish and wildlife species.

We are seeking highly motivated and experienced field technicians to collect field data associated with spawning adult chinook and coho salmon on the Hoh and Sol Duc drainages while promoting the conservation of Washington State’s salmonid populations. 
The Fish Program within the Department of Fish and Wildlife is looking to fill one (1) Scientific Technician 2 position. The duty station for this position is located at 551 Tillicum Lane, Forks, WA.

The Scientific Technician 2 contributes to the mission by providing the data needed to manage recreational and commercial fishing opportunities while ensuring the long-term conservation of salmon and steelhead populations and by contributing to the recovery of federal ESA listed anadromous stocks

DutiesKEY DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

• Conduct spawning ground surveys to obtain redd counts of chinook and coho salmon primarily on foot, and occasionally via drift boat.
• Collect biological samples from salmon carcasses in the field – scales, otoliths, CWT.
• Reviews, records, and tabulates adult salmon redd, salmon count and carcass related data.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work Setting, including hazards:
This position requires the ability to stand and walk for long periods of time, often outdoors in remote locations over rugged terrain.
Work will involve walking and occasionally rafting in swift-water streams or rivers to survey salmon spawning areas.
Work will occasionally occur during periods of inclement/adverse weather.
Wading/stream crossings in swift currents and over slick substrate.

Schedule:
40 hours per week and may include work on some weekend days and holidays.

This position is in the bargaining unit represented by the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals and is subject to the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish & Wildlife, and the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals.”  QualificationsRequired Qualifications:

• Ability to research and gather information effectively.
• Consistently and accurately documents information and updates records/databases.
• Correctly identifies, collects, organizes and documents redd and fish count data. Ability to collect biological data from salmon carcasses.
• Previous experience identifying Pacific salmon and salmon redds.
• Understand basic computer operation with experience in Microsoft Excel and Word.
• Ability to work independently with very little direct oversight.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Working knowledge of salmon life history.
• Experience collecting biological samples from Pacific salmon or other fish species.
• Experience rowing a pontoon or drift boat to conduct spawning surveys, and the ability to navigate through rocky chutes.
