Natural Resource Worker 2– Maintenance and Operations/ORV Trails
Olympic Region – Port Angeles

This is a full-time, Seasonal, represented position.
Anticipated appointment November 1 to April 30

This position will work as a team member to accomplish trail maintenance projects for designated motorized recreation sites in the Olympic Region. The work that will be performed consists of trail and facility construction and maintenance including: campgrounds, trails, trailheads, bathrooms, kiosks, picnic tables and more. This is an RCO grant funded position that is intentionally active during winter and spring months so that the incumbent is available to work with DNR Wildfire operations throughout the summer and fall months.

What we will trust you with:

This position will require the employee to make choices, determinations and judgements often and in accordance with the Agency’s and Region’s policies, procedures and operating values. Since the position is largely based in the field at recreation areas, interactions with the public will be a regular occurrence. Judgements will need to be made to achieve pre-determined outcomes with both limited and abundant resources. Schedules, projects, and areas of emphasis will need to be prioritized by the employee while considering multiple variables, including but not limited to: safety, efficiency, and public perception.

Who are we looking for?

The right candidate has:

  • Familiarity with the principles and practices of recreation maintenance and how public involvement fits into the landscape.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques for conducting basic facility maintenance and repairs.
  • Experience operating and performing routine maintenance on chainsaws, quads, motorcycles, mini excavator and other light equipment, as well as hand tools common to trail and facility maintenance and repairs.
  • Ability to work well both independently and as part of a highly motivated team.
  • Good verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills as demonstrated by the ability to resolve conflicts, write effectively, and communicate with diverse groups both internal and external.
  • Ability to work on uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
  • The incumbent in this position is required to travel.
  • Must be able to work a flexible work schedule, including evenings and occasional weekends.
  • Must successfully complete a DNR trailer towing safety training course and a DNR ATV Safety course during the employee probation period.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function.  Employees who drive for state business, whether in a state or privately-owned vehicle, are required to possess a valid license as defined in policy PO02-006 and abide by all other driver responsibility requirements. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • ORV/ATV, equine, mountain bike riding skills, small equipment operation, and strong outdoor skills.
  • High School or General Education Diploma.
  • Experience working with volunteers or as a volunteer.
  • One year experience leading crews or workers to complete trail maintenance projects.
  • Two years’ experience performing trail maintenance activities.
