Tiller Ranger District, on the beautiful Umpqua National Forest is outreaching for a permanent, full-time Supervisory Forestry Technician (Recreation) position at the GS-9 level. This position will be the lead for developed and wilderness recreation management. Duty station is the Tiller Ranger Station, Tiller Oregon.
The Position
The position is responsible for the oversight of the developed recreation program on the district. This includes managing South Umpqua Falls day use area, multiple developed campgrounds, a wide variety of trailheads and day use areas with the majority of the trail system lying within the wilderness, several dispersed camp sites with varying levels of development ranging from primitive to the highly developed, and several cabin and lookout rentals. Some special use management is also required of this position. The incumbent supervises 1 – Permanent Seasonal (18/8) employee as well as a total of 3 temporary 1039 seasonal employees. The person chosen is responsible for the administrative and human resource management functions relative to staff supervised. They are also expected to apply technical methods and procedures to resolve problems related to recreation site care and maintenance and resource protection. They will ensure that fee collection is performed in a timely, accurate manner is accordance with collection officer regulations. They will be also be responsible for contacting visitors to provide information about recreation regulations, opportunities, and current restrictions. This person is expected to work both independently and be able to lead a small project work crew.
The district also manages a sizable wilderness area, and this position serves as the lead for trails and recreation management in that area. This position also is the main point of contact for outside groups and partners who help maintain the trails.
Tiller is an all season recreation area attracting recreation users to excellent trout fishing and all associated summer and winter recreation opportunities. Tiller and the South Umpqua drainage are significant stops on the Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway for visitors traveling to Crater Lake National Park from the I-5 corridor. When combined with the spectacular views, trout, steelhead, and salmon fishing, trails, wilderness experiences and motorized access options the Umpqua is a recreation hotspot for the State.

Forest Information
The Umpqua National Forest covers nearly one million acres along the western slopes of the Cascade Mountains in Southwest Oregon. The Forest encompasses a diverse area of sparkling rivers and lakes, deep canyons, and rugged mountains up to 9,200 feet in elevation. The Umpqua produces a wealth of water resources, timber, wildlife, fish, minerals, and outdoor recreation opportunities. Included within the Forest are the North Umpqua Wild and Scenic River, a portion of the Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway, three wildernesses, the Oregon Cascades Recreation Area, and a very large hydropower project.
The Umpqua National Forest employs approximately 220 permanent and 120 temporary employees. The Forest has four ranger districts (located at Cottage Grove, Glide, Tiller, and Tiller) and the Dorena Genetic Resource Center, which supports genetic resource and vegetation management programs for Oregon and Washington. The Forest also provides administrative and engineering assistance to the Wolf Creek Civilian Conservation Corps Center located near Glide.
Recreation opportunities abound including fishing, hunting, hiking, swimming, picnicking, rock-hounding, and camping. There are hundreds of miles of hiking trails on the various districts and many developed recreation sites. There are also wilderness lakes and ponds, with fishing year round and miles of streams open for summer angling. Within a 1-1/2 hour drive of Roseburg, the nearest full-service community, are both the Oregon Coast and Cascade Mountains, with numerous trails for hiking and backpacking. Steelhead and salmon fishing are popular on both the North and South Umpqua rivers, along with lake fishing for trout on Lemolo Lake, Tiller, and other high elevation lakes. The North Umpqua River is world known for its summer steelhead fly-fishing. There is camping at various campgrounds accessible by road along the South Umpqua River and throughout the District. For the hunter, the Forest and surrounding area has several large elk herds, plus black-tailed deer, bear, cougar, grouse, quail, and water fowl. Crater Lake National Park borders the Forest and is a two-hour drive from Roseburg. In the winter there is unlimited cross-country skiing and snowmobiling around the Diamond Lake and Lemolo Lake Recreation Areas. Downhill snow cat skiing is available at Mount Bailey, and several downhill ski areas are within a 2-1/2 to 4 hour drive.
About the Community
The Tiller Ranger Station is located in a rural area of tremendous beauty. The town of Tiller is 23 miles from the I-5 corridor. There are several small communities along this 23 miles with a variety of services. Roseburg is the nearest full-service community, with a population of 21,500 people within the city limits and a total population of 50,000 to 60,000 within a 20-mile service area. It is located 70 miles south of Eugene on I-5; 97 miles north of Medford; and 80 miles east of the Pacific Ocean. The Umpqua National Forest Supervisor’s Office is located in Roseburg. The city is at the confluence of the South Umpqua and North Umpqua rivers, at an elevation of 465 feet. Roseburg is the county seat for Douglas County. Once the self-proclaimed “Timber Capital of the World”, the economy of the surrounding community has diversified greatly over the past decade. The wood products industry has expanded to include other light manufacturing and service industries such as electrical equipment, recreational boats, and aluminum power cable. Douglas county has a vibrant agricultural industry with large berry farms, markets, and prominent vineyards and wineries. Other major employment is provided by the medical, tourism, government, and service sectors. Tiller employees live throughout the various local communities and many commute from the Roseburg and Medford areas.
Climate
Roseburg has a moderate, Mediterranean climate with four distinct seasons. Average temperature in summer is 66 °F with highs to 100 °F, while average temperature in winter is 44 °F with occasional frost, but very little snow during December, January and February. The average annual precipitation is 35″. Roseburg has one of the longest growing seasons in Oregon.

Government housing is available within the Housing Compound at the Tiller Ranger Station. Several options are available at various square footages and prices ranging from $6.00 to $25 per day.
