The Salmon Drift Creek Watershed Council (SDCWC) is a 501(c)(3) dedicated to the protection and restoration of local watersheds. SDCWC is hiring a part-time Education Coordinator for up to 10 hours per week to help lead its newly-funded Restoring Ecosystems and Educating Future Conservation Leaders Program (“REEF”). The REEF program is a partnership to protect and restore local watersheds, promote environmental literacy, and provide conservation career development through a hands-on, science-based curriculum, with subjects ranging from watershed health surveys to native plant propagation. REEF provides a means to teach students and other members of the public about the importance of healthy watersheds. Special emphasis will be placed on the use of tools and techniques to monitor, protect and restore watersheds, with a focus on improving salmon and steelhead habitat.

Job Description:

The Education Coordinator will be responsible for organizing and implementing the REEF Program through the following activities:

 Coordinate with local teachers to incorporate REEF program activities in school curricula

 Draft program educational materials

 Lead field trips to and educational activities in local watersheds

 Host conservation career days at Taft High School

 Lead native plant workshops at the REEF nursery

 Organize and attend annual overnight REEF Ecology Camp

 Draft required reports to REEF program grant funders

 Seek funding opportunities to continue the REEF program

 Other activities consistent with REEF program goals and SDCWC’s mission.

 

Required Qualifications:

This position requires excellent communication and organizational skills and an enthusiastic personality. The ideal candidate will have a background in science, environmental education, native plant propagation and engaging youth in outdoor programs. Applicant must be able to lift at least 25 pounds, hike over uneven terrain, work outdoors daily, hold a valid driver license, provide own transportation and pass background screening to work with children.

Compensation:

Hourly compensation. Rate dependent upon experience. SDCWC is not able to cover relocation expenses. Position currently funded through Summer 2014, with potential for extension.
