JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Wildlife Scientist (Marine)
Designation: P2
Work Unit: Marine Ecosystems, Flora and Fauna Division
Position number: 4825
Responsible to: Director, Marine Ecosystems
Primary Objective
To undertake research, monitoring and provide advice on the conservation of marine wildlife in the
Northern Territory.
Key Responsibilities
1. Supervise, coordinate and undertake research and monitoring activities related to the conservation of
marine wildlife in the Northern Territory, in particular marine turtles and dugongs.
2. Provide advice that contributes to the management and conservation of marine wildlife in the Northern
Territory, including environmental impact assessments.
3. Contribute to the management and development of spatial databases, including marine strandings and
other survey data.
4. Contribute to the delivery of the Marine WildWatch program, including after hour’s call-outs and the
recovery of stranded marine mega-fauna (marine turtles, dolphins and dugongs).
5. Undertake liaison with landholders and other stakeholders.
Selection Criteria
Essential:
1. Relevant Degree (science or environmental).
2. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in developing and implementing research and monitoring
programs for marine wildlife.
3. High level verbal and written communication skills, including experience in communicating research
results and management advice to a diverse range of peoples, and writing of scientific reports,
technical reviews and assessments.
4. Demonstrated ability to manage spatial databases and analyse data.
5. Ability to interact effectively with people from different cultures and work as part of a small team.
6. Current Drivers Licence.
Desirable:
7. Demonstrated knowledge of marine biodiversity of northern Australia or demonstrated ability to
acquire this knowledge.
8. Knowledge and experience in the use of Geographic Information Systems or demonstrated ability to
acquire this knowledge.
9. Current Senior First Aid Certificate
10. Current Coxswain Certificate.
