Job description

Position Summary:

Develops and executes Pinchot’s annual fundraising plan, including individual donor cultivation, foundation and grant support, alumni relationships and special eventsManages and directs the support mechanisms for the development function: administrative support, database management, and collateral development. Supports the President and board in making fundraising asks. Adheres to the highest ethical standards; maintains donor confidentiality; demonstrates an empathetic disposition and perseverance; has an optimistic and positive attitude, and sensitivity to the needs of donors.

Primary Responsibilities:

Fundraising. Collaborates with senior management and other key constituents to create and implement fundraising strategy. Heavily engaged in the cultivation of donors, and participates in solicitations to secure financial support from individuals, foundations and corporations. Project manages fundraising and “touch” activities. Manages comprehensive and capital campaigns. Manages staff fundraising initiatives to build a collective fundraising culture.

Grants. Participates in the decision process for go-no go on specific grant initiatives. Writes grant proposals and reports back to funding sources. Manages acknowledgement process for grants received. Manages the schedule of projects / deliverables for grants being pursued or undertaken. Manages communications with grant internal/external stakeholders, including public relations communications for grants received.

Fundraising Support. Coordinates and supports development-related activities conducted by senior management and the Board of Trustees. Provides background research, giving histories and contact information in support of touch and solicitation activities. Monitors prospect contacts to ensure positive and purposeful donor relations. Manages the donor database and all other donor records and files, as well as administrative processes including the pledge reminder and acknowledgement programs.

Supervision. Manages administrative personnel with responsibilities in support of fundraising and the Change Agent in Residence (CAIR) program, including record keeping, data entry, phone call banking, gift acknowledgement processing, administrative tasks and event logistics.

CAIR Program. Manages the CAIR nomination, vetting, and selection processes. Focuses on identifying prospective CAIRs who can contribute to the student academic experience and further BGI’s mission.

Events. Takes primary responsibility for managing donor and CAIR events.. Operates as an internal customer of the Communications Team, leveraging its marketing and event capacities to schedule, plan, and promote events.

Scheduling. Maintains and broadcasts a calendar of donor events, campaigns, grants, and other development activities.

Data Management. Develops and tracks metrics/benchmarks for fundraising, in collaboration with board: donor touches, asks, giving history, prospect and new donor development. Ensures that important data generated by the solicitation process is collected, entered into the donor database, and reported out to key stakeholders.

Budget. Represents the Institutional Advancement department, contributing to the overall organizational budget. Coordinates input into the operating plan process for the department. Reviews plan-to-actual financials on a monthly basis, reporting to his/her supervisor on the reasons for all material variances, and making recommendations for changes to operations. Participates in the formulation and execution of action plans for improving the financial performance of the Institute.

Knowledge & Skill Requirements:

  • Work Experience. Minimum of three (3) years working in advancement, fundraising, and/or development for a non-profit organization. Prior experience working in higher education preferred.
  • Communications skills. Good public speaker with strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to present ideas effectively, both orally and in writing, in both face-to-face and on-line environments. Ability to negotiate with donors and key stakeholders as needed.
  • Team player. Places a higher emphasis on contributions to a work team, rather than on receiving recognition for personal contribution. Establish and maintains effective working relationships with faculty, students, staff, professional peers and the public.
  • Strong technical skill set. Demonstrated ability to operate either Mac or Microsoft operating environments. Competent with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint functionality, and the SalesForce software platform.
  • Well organized. Good time management and task prioritization skills. Develops and adheres to consistent structure with demonstrated excellence in organizational, managerial, and communication skills.
  • Supervisory. Manage the Advancement staff by ensuring performance meets departmental goals.

Educational Requirements: Bachelor’s degree required in a relevant field; graduate studies preferred.

Out-of-the-Ordinary Working Conditions: Occasional evening and weekend work at donor and academic events.
