Job description
OVERVIEW:
Assist Lead Preschool Teacher in the facilitation of preschool classes for children enrolled in award winning preschool program at The Hands On Children’s Museum. During school breaks, support day camp instructors and Camp Coordinator in the facilitation of day camps. Support other education programs such as parenting classes, offsite events in the community.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist the Lead Teacher in facilitating developmentally appropriate learning activities within the classroom or museum. Must be comfortable in independently leading small groups of students in opening activities, gross motor activities, music, read-alouds, etc.
- Understand and use positive behavioral guidance and strategies when interacting with the children. Take directions and follow the lead of the early childhood educator to maintain consistency in the classroom.
- Help to monitor environment for hazards or sanitary concerns to ensure a safe and healthy learning experience.
- Help to maintain appropriate staff-to-child ratios in the classroom or other areas of the museum.
- Provide excellent customer service to preschool children and their families, as well as to all visitors and employees in the museum.
- Cooperate with other staff members to ensure the smooth operation of the preschool.
- Help maintain the optimum conditions of the classroom, teacher supply room, and storage closets.
- Attend scheduled department and team meetings and trainings.
REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education required.
1+ year experience directly working with children ages 3-5.
Understanding of the importance of play and developmentally appropriate activities.
Must be highly dependable and responsible.
Must have the ability to remain calm, be flexible, and foster positive social skills.
Ability to interact positively with young children and their families. Excellent interpersonal skills.
WA State Driver’s License and own transportation
Ability to obtain First Aid/CPR certification
Able to lift 50 lbs., be on feet for most of the work day and supervise children in busy and loud public spaces.

Core schedule M-Th or M-Fri (depending on preschool class) plus able to work at weekly, monthly and other periodic education programs and museum special events such as annual “Noon Year’s Eve”, “Boo Bash” & “Sand in the City” celebrations which fall on evenings and weekends. Pos #1 = 25+ hours per week Pos #2 =35+ hours per week. $10/hr. Preschool runs Sept-May. Position converts to ½ time Camp Assistant during school breaks one week in April, two weeks in December and June-August – more school break hours may be available if cross trained in other museum departments (Visitor Services, Reception, Café).
