The National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT) is seeking a Sustainable Agriculture Specialist. NCAT is a private non-profit organization that works to foster and promote sustainable technologies and systems, especially for the benefit of economically disadvantaged individuals and communities. The Specialist will work directly with farmers and ranchers on crop and livestock production, soil health, water quality, organic certification, and other topics. This is a great opportunity for a motivated person to promote sustainable farming and ranching and strengthen local and regional food systems in Texas, New Mexico, and the Southwest. The position will be located at NCAT’s San Antonio, TX office.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND ABILITY: Minimum requirements are BA/BS degree and 3 years farm-based experience or MS degree and 1 year farm-based experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in horticulture, agronomy, livestock, pasture and range management, or a related field. A demonstrated interest in outreach to socially disadvantaged persons would be a plus.

The successful candidate will need to have the following:

  • A demonstrated commitment to sustainable and organic farming and ranching
  • An ability to build relationships with small farmers, ranchers, and non-profit organizations
  • The ability to work independently, and willingness to travel
  • Excellent communication skills, with experience in writing and public speaking
  • The ability to recognize and pursue development opportunities in all NCAT program areas

SALARY AND BENEFITS: $30,000 – $45,000 depending on qualifications and experience. Excellent benefits include paid vacation and holidays, health, life and disability insurance, a cafeteria and 401(k) plan, and a pleasant, professional working environment.
