This position is located in the Office of Surface Water (OSW) and provides National leadership in the science of surface-water hydrology, hydraulics, and fluvial geomorphology and ensures the consistency and quality of these activities in the USGS.
DUTIES:
The Senior Science Advisor for Surface Water provides expert consultation and advice to senior executive management on the development and enhancement of the entire USGS program in the surface-water field. Directs and oversees the USGS national streamgaging program. Major duties include:
– Serves as a senior surface-water specialist with the fundamental responsibility for providing policy-level advice to the Director and Associate Director for Water and their staffs.
– Performs extremely complex work of broad significance involving the application of research results to surface-water investigation by translating results of research into direct and practical application to field operations in the USGS. Evaluates technical projects of National scope.
– Proposes and defends the direction to be taken in the National USGS programs concerned with the surface-water discipline.
– Represents the surface-water interests of the Bureau, Department, and the United States at scientific and technical meetings and gatherings inside or outside the Federal government.
– Evaluates pertinent scientific, technological, social, economic, and environmental trends in order to anticipate future needs and hydrologic applications important to the National welfare.
– Serves as a technical consultant and mentor to other senior scientific colleagues involved in the direction, supervision, and conduct of operations and research in the surface-water field.
