Health Care Without Harm is an international coalition of hospitals and health care systems, medical professionals, community groups, health-affected constituencies, labor unions, environmental and environmental health organizations and religious groups that advocate globally to eliminate healthcare practices that harm people and the environment. HCWH envisions a future with healthy people, resilient communities and a sustainable planet. About the Work

The Northwest Healthy Food in Health Care Project is a regional extension of the national Healthy Food in Health Care initiative of Health Care Without Harm, and brings an environmental and public health perspective to mobilizing support for sustainable food production practices and systems. The program recognizes and engages two primary drivers of change: market demand generated by institutional food buyers and health professional advocacy for organizational and public policies that support healthy and sustainable food systems. The Project provides education, resources, events and technical support to participating facilities and professionals in the region with specific activities and partners in Oregon and Washington.

Location:

This contract position will be responsible for fulfilling deliverables for coordinating activities in Oregon and Washington. It can be based in either state but must be easily accessible to the Seattle and Portland markets. Regional travel will be required to accomplish this work.

Contractor Overview:

HCWH seeks an experienced and committed individual to work with health care organizations and health professionals to improve the ecological sustainability of facilities and practices in support of sustainable food systems. This contract position will work on a set of projects that connect the regional work with our National policy and procurement objectives.

Responsibilities:

Coordinate the NW HFHC Project, including the following:

  • Develop program objectives, work-plans and timelines.
  • Support the development of Project funding support through participation with grant development from foundations and government agencies.
  • Coordinate Project activities with healthcare facility representatives, health professionals/practitioners and relevant partners from the governmental, private and non-profit sector.
  • Plan and convene educational meetings, forums and conferences for healthcare professionals and health practitioners related to project objectives.
  • Develop and disseminate resources, tools and materials to support Project implementation.
  • Track and evaluate Project outcomes for reporting, strategy refinement and program planning.
  • Supervise associated project staff, volunteers and interns as needed.
  • Provide Project content for HCWH Website, newsletter and social media

Qualifications: Experience/Accomplishments

  • Bachelor’s degree in food systems, public health, nutrition or planning and 3-4 years of experience providing program coordination in not-for-profit setting (graduate degree can compensate for some work experience).
  • Experience in development and implementation of advocacy campaigns, educational content and organizing events.
  • Experience with funding development, tracking and reporting.
  • Understanding of or experience in local, state and/or federal policy advocacy.
  • Understanding of public and environmental health threats posed by conventional industrial agriculture practices, specifically pertaining to antibiotic overuse, chemical pesticides, and climate change.
  • Experience with sustainable food systems and institutional purchasing preferred.
  • Experience working in the health care sector preferred.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills, excellent oral and written communication skills to carry out deliverables.
  • Proficiency in computer and communications technologies including Microsoft Office Suite, relational database software, website management, social media.
  • Ability to travel between Oregon and Washington to carry out deliverables.

Contract terms:

The positions deliverables are expected to take about 40 hours per week. The contractor will be paid $5000 per month through meeting deliverables set forth in the contractor agreement. The contractor agreement will begin in January 2015 and last through December 31, 2015. Potential for a contract after that date is funding dependent; additional hours and deliverables possible with new funding.

Contractor will not be an employee of Health Care Without Harm. Accordingly, Contractor is responsible for payment of all taxes and business license fees and any registration and filing requirements arising out of Contractor’s activities under this Contractor Agreement. Contractor is not entitled to any Health Care Without Harm employee benefits or HCWH professional liability coverage. Professional liability coverage and infrastructure expenses such as equipment, phone and internet service will be the sole responsibility of the Contractor.
