JBLM Fish and Wildlife Internship (ORISE)
Joint Base Lewis-McChord Fish and Wildlife is seeking to hire two highly motivated, conservation and restoration focused interns to conduct research and implement restoration projects. Interns will assist with data collection on several on-going science and land management projects, including but not limited to:
– amphibian surveys
– prairie vegetation monitoring
– butterfly surveys
Restoration work may include application of herbicide and use of power equipment including brush cutters and chainsaws.
This position is full-time (40 hours per week) from February 15 – July 15, 2015.Typical work week is Monday thru Thursday 7 AM to 5 PM, but may include occasional evenings and weekends. Interns receive a monthly stipend of $3400/ month.
Qualifications: Must be a recent graduate (within 3 years), or a student in good standing with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Must be a United States citizen and possess a valid driver’s license. If hired, applicants must supply their own health insurance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in natural resources, biology, botany or related field
- Experience performing a variety of outdoor work in inclement weather; tolerance for working in difficult field conditions (i.e. dense wetlands)
- Ability to follow scientific protocols, collect, record, and compile data
- Capable of rapidly acquiring new species identification and memorization of scientific names
- Proficient using GPS units to navigate to precise locations
- Experience with Microsoft Office and GIS software
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strive to develop and maintain positive, productive, respectful working relationships with coworkers and collaborators
