Major Taylor Project

Ride Leader/Instructor

Part Time, 12-15 hrs./week

Ride Leaders for the Major Taylor Project lead weekly after-school urban bicycling rides at various High schools and Middle Schools in Tacoma. We are currently seeking Instructors for Lincoln High School and Stewart Middle School in Tacoma.

The Major Taylor Project is an after-school program produced by the Cascade Bicycle Club’s Diversity & Inclusion department. The effort intentionally serving diverse and/or, low-income communities to increase access to bicycling. The schools in which we work are rich in racial and ethnic diversity, and as such Major Taylor Project ride leaders must be well equipped with social sensitivity skills and have experience navigating and leading conversations relating to power, oppression, privilege.

Ride leaders work directly with students. They are responsible for creating a healthy, safe, and empowering environment for all participants in ride club. Ride leaders have experience working with and are passionate about youth and are excited to share the joy of bicycling.

Great candidates have:

experience working with underprivileged youth

great cycling skills and a knowledge of bike mechanics

punctuality and organizational skills

direct communication and group facilitation capacity

a willingness to learn

Duties:

Plan, coordinate, and lead, Weekly Rides and Spring/Summer field trips.

Ride planning includes route mapping, ride volunteer assignment, and teaching safe cycling habits/behavior.

Conduct outreach for and lead spring ride club at assigned MTP location.

Attend monthly MTP meetings.

Keep record of attendance, destination, time and mileage for each ride in tandem with other ride leaders.

Administer Group Health Research pre-evaluation questionnaires for each new student and follow-up evaluations twice p​er season.

Expected Schedule

HOURS: 2 – 3 clubs per week at 4-5 hours each session. Time and location depend on the overall MTP team schedule, we work for a balance that best fits the group.

Weekend event rides on:

-April 18th, May 30th, June 27th and July 11-12, 2015
