Mt. Hood National Forest /Gifford Pinchot/Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area   Stream Inventory Program Internship

The Mt. Hood National Forest, Gifford Pinchot National Forest, and the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area has 4-6 internship positions available in the Stream Inventory Program. These positions provide an opportunity to experience the streams in the Pacific Northwest, up close and personal. The job teaches data collection methods using a documented Stream Inventory Protocol. It encompasses many disciplines such as fisheries, ecology, botany, wildlife, and hydrology. A base knowledge in one of these sciences is recommended but not required. These positions are designed to give a person the opportunity to get experience working in the woods and see the interactions of the stream with the rest of the landscape.

Crews (usually 2 people) generally start at the mouth of the stream and work to the headwaters collecting data on stream habitats, stream conditions, riparian condition, and fish presence (snorkeling). The crews note wildlife sightings, types of management activities (harvest units, water diversions, etc.), and recreational activities among other things.

The job may require long hikes in rough terrain under all types of weather conditions. It also consists of hiking in the stream on uneven and slippery surfaces.

Most equipment is provided such as specialized wading boots, waders, and general survey gear.

Internship would start June 13th, 2011, ending date is negotiable (starting date is as well). An important Stream Inventory Training session takes place from June 13th – June 17th, 2010 in Pendleton, OR. Expenses are paid.

Internship includes $100/week, government vehicle is provided. Housing is paid for by government.

Initial mileage will be reimbursed from interns’ home location (up to $500) to get to the worksite.

Substantial travel (using government vehicle) may be required from a main base as stream sites are spread over 3 Forests.  Camping may also be used to cut down on travel time.
