Position Announcement: AmeriCorps Sustainability Coordinator

Start: September 1, 2015 Full-Time: Monday-Friday, up to 40 hours per week, some evenings and weekends
Duration: September 1, 2015 – July 15, 2016
The Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit, has two positions open for a full time AmeriCorps Sustainability Coordinator position..
HCSEG strives to connect landscape, citizens, visitors and wildlife through collaborative salmon restoration activities and sustainable farming practices. For more information about HCSEG, visit www. pnwsalmoncenter.org.
HCSEG is home to a small demonstration farm. Located at the tip of the Hood Canal, the farm is comprised of a 38 acre farm with a U-Pick garden, P-Patch, pumpkin patch, chickens, goats, alpacas and llamas. Staff and volunteers are dedicated to providing the community with a place to acquire fresh vegetables and learn how agriculture and salmon ecosystems can coexist.
Our program will help provide local students and families with the skills they need to grow their own vegetables and produce at home, and the information needed to make healthy food choices at the grocery store.
Our AmeriCorps members will primarily be responsible for coordination of our sustainability program, aimed at educating community members on healthy behaviors and sustainable agriculture. However, they will also have an opportunity to collect and enter data, mentor volunteers, coordinate outreach events, maintain equipment, or collaborate with 4 research scientists on any of their project needs.
Members’ tasks include, but are not limited to:
 Work with community partners and local school districts to implement nutrition curriculum
 Hold five workshops focused on growing food for youth and adults outside of the traditional classroom setting
 Attend Mason County’s Eating for Health committee meetings on a monthly basis to collaborate with regional partners and individuals with common goals in the area Page 2 of 2 2
 Assist with Belfair Elementary School’s Garden Club, an afterschool program focused on nature and garden education
 Represent HCSEG at community and educational outreach events, providing information on nutrition and HCSEG’s sustainability programs
 Evaluate outreach efforts by collecting data throughout the service term
 Manage and coordinate HCSEG’s U-Pick and P-Patch programs, and work with volunteers and crews to maintain these areas

Qualifications:
 Some college education
 Interest in education, nutrition or the environment  Strong written and verbal communication skills  While not required, Spanish skills are desireable.
