Purpose: This position presents Pacific Science Center’s Outreach Education programming at schools and community events in the broader Seattle area.
Summary: Each Outreach Education Teacher presents programming at elementary schools, middle schools, community centers and preschools in the Seattle area by presenting assemblies, setting up hands-on exhibit areas, teaching classroom lessons and providing after school programming. Part time teachers are responsible for some logistical aspects of programming, and may be asked to help with other administrative and curricular projects as interest and need dictates.
Key Job Responsibilities:
- Science Education and Educational Planning: Teach classroom lessons, perform science shows, present after-school programming and effectively display exhibit areas.
- Customer Service : Ensure excellent customer service by working closely with school staff, community leaders and parent volunteers in coordination of school and group presentations; interact appropriately with students, and project a professional, positive, and enthusiastic image of Pacific Science Center.
- Program Operations and Asset Management: Communicate with schools and organizations to discuss logistics of visits, make travel arrangements and maintain timely written and oral communication. Purchase supplies upon request, support maintenance of program equipment and materials in the office and at program sites, and assist with specific components of the curriculum and materials development process, as assigned.
- Safety: Contribute to the safety of Pacific Science Center staff and program participants by exercising good judgment, following safety procedures and alerting others of problems when necessary.
- Other duties as assigned
Major Challenges and Special Conditions:
Presenting shows for an audience of up to 450 people, occasionally teaching up to six 45-minute lessons in one day
Working flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as scheduled. Driving a 15-passenger van, and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds
Office space on second floor
Position Requirements: Knowledge, Education, Skills, Experience, Abilities:
Required:
Bachelor’s Degree in science, education, or related field, valid driver’s license and good driving record
Experience working with elementary-aged students in a formal and/or informal educational setting
Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Google Documents
Desired:
Teaching certificate
Previous museum and/or non-profit experience
Abilities:
Must be at least 21 years old for vehicle insurance purposes
Proven verbal and written communication skills
Detail oriented with excellent organizational skills
Proven problem solving skills and initiative
Maintain high level of productivity in a dynamic office environment
Flexibility to work on several projects at once, and the ability to change priorities as needed both in terms of management’s needs and customer’s needs
Ability to work cooperatively with a variety of people
Excellent customer service skills including the ability to serve Pacific Science Center staff and outside contacts in a courteous manner
Ability to work independently
Smiling team player, positive attitude, service oriented, knowledgeable of Pacific Science Center programs
