The Siuslaw National Forest will soon be advertising for one permanent, full-time Environmental Coordinator , GS 0101/0401/1301- 12. (The position may be advertised at grade 11/12 based on outreach response and other considerations.) The duty station is the Supervisors Office located in Corvallis, Oregon. The purpose of this Outreach Notice is to inform the potential applicant pool of this position.

ABOUT THE POSITION
This position reports to the Forest’s Natural Resource Staff Officer, and serves as the subject matter expert and Forest coordinator to help ensure compliance with NEPA, CEQ, FOIA, NMFA, FOIA, and appeals/litigation regulations, policy and direction. The position advises Forest line officers, and helps resolve conflicts and issues emerging in interdisciplinary planning and preparation of environmental analyses for project work. Develops and implements environmental policy training for Forest personnel. Develops and coordinates budgets for planning and monitoring of Forest projects. Leads the monitoring and reporting of Forest Plan implementation, as well as revision of the Forest Plan when required.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Must meet education requirements for one of the following professional series:
Social Science Series, 0101 – Degree: behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
General Natural Resources Management and Biological Sciences Series, 0401 – Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
Physical Science Series, 1301 – Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
In addition for the GS-12, must have one year of specialzed experience at the GS-11 level.
THE DUTY STATION
The position is stationed in Corvallis, Oregon. Applicants must apply to this location if they wish to be considered. The office is sited on the Oregon State University campus, co-located with the PNW Forestry Sciences Laboratory adjacent to the OSU Forestry Department.
ABOUT THE FOREST
The forest lies about 20 miles west of Corvallis and encompasses 630,000 acres stretching from Hebo in the north, down along the Pacific Coast south through the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area (covering 30,000 acres).
The Forest lies predominantly on the west side and crest of the Oregon Coast Range; the highest point is Marys Peak at 4,097 feet. The peak offers a panoramic view of the Cascades, Willamette Valley and coast range.
The forest is known for its density of great rivers and fishing (3,200 miles of perennial and 5,000 miles of intermittent streams used by 5 species of salmon), as well as abundant elk and other wildlife, tall trees and diverse forest products in a coastal rain forest environment.
There are 3 wilderness areas, covering 22,500 acres and 132 miles of hiking trails within the forest. Other recreation opportunities include beach-combing, sand dune OHV riding and trekking, and boating/fishing in abundant coastal lakes, bays, and estuaries.
The Forest management emphasis is primarily on promoting development of old growth forest habitat to sustain and recover federally listed species like spotted owls, marbled murrelet and coho salmon; our program priorities are: 1) Creating healthy forest habitat; 2) Restoring stream, lake, wetland and estuarine habitats; 3) Nurturing partnerships leading to whole watershed restoration; and 4) Providing high quality coastal recreational experiences. ABOUT CORVALLIS
Corvallis is centrally located in the Willamette Valley, ninety miles southwest of Portland, 35 miles south of Oregon’s capital city of Salem, and about 40 miles north of Eugene. It has a population of 50,000 and receives approximately 40 inches of annual precipitation in a mild climate. Corvallis is a college town, home of Oregon State University that offers big city amenities while still maintaining a small town atmosphere. The University has an excellent natural resources and forestry program. The Pacific Ocean and world-renowned shoreline is an hour drive from Corvallis.
