West Eugene Wetlands Program
2016 Temporary/Seasonal Job (2 positions available)

Pay rate: $13.00 – $14.50/hour, DOE
Work period: Approximately 14-16 weeks of work from late May or early June through mid-October 2016, with up to 4 weeks off in August or early September, depending on work needs.
Statement of Duties
The Botany Assistants will work in the West Eugene Wetlands on vegetation monitoring and seed collection and processing. Most of the work time will be in the field:
Seed Collection and Processing: Assistants will collect and clean seeds of local Willamette Valley native plants from public and remote sites within 20 miles of Eugene, document seed collection activities, mix seed for use in restoration projects, map population locations using GPS and on-screen digitizing, enter records into a database, and other duties as assigned.
Vegetation Monitoring: Assistants will quantitatively monitor wetland plant communities using point-intercept methods, enter data into hand-held computers, identify plants within monitoring plots and restoration sites, map locations of introduced species, and other duties as assigned.
Successful candidates for the Botany Assistant positions will have the ability to rapidly identify Willamette Valley native prairie plants in the field, with prior coursework in plant identification preferred. In addition, Botany Assistants must have good interpersonal skills, and be able to communicate in a professional manner with the public and other employees. Botany assistants must be able to hike several miles, keep detailed records, and perform physical tasks, such as lifting 50 lb bags of seed, installing corner posts of monitoring plots, and repeated bending and crouching during seed collection and monitoring, in inclement weather and in rural settings.
NOTE: Botany Assistants typically work 40 hours per week, 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM, M – F. Placement on the salary scale will depend on the experience level of the applicant. Botany Assistants must be age 18 or older to operate a vehicle. These temporary jobs require you to wear closed-toed shoes, long pants, and provide your own rain and sun protection in the field. To be hired, you must pass a driving records check and maintain a driving record that meets City standards. These jobs require passing a physical exam which includes a drug screen.
