Position Title: Forestry Intern

Reports to: Harvest Planning & Engineering Manager

POSITION PURPOSE

This is a temporary (3-4 months) full-time non-exempt position based out of the NW Timberlands Division reporting directly to the Harvest Planning and Engineering Manager.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Interns will perform most of the tasks listed below as time allows and may be given additional responsibilities as projects arise. During the internship the incumbent will rotate between three departments focusing on silviculture, engineering and timber cruising. Examples of activities this position will participate in include:

Intensive Forest Management Activities:

  • Pre-commercial thinning: recon units, layout boundaries and conduct pre-PCT surveys.
  • Stem map permanent sample plots and refresh plots for fall measurement.
  • Assist with aerial spray program. Herbaceous, Scotch Broom, early foliar (early-mid May) and/or fall site prep.
  • Help with bear feeding program, if needed (spring).
  • Flag stream crossings along roads before roadside spray season (mid-May to mid-June).
  • Be available for fire suppression.
  • Assist in spot hand treatment brush control, i.e. Scotch Broom and Big Leaf Maple treatment.
  • Conduct special stocking surveys on new plantations.
  • Conduct late summer stocking surveys.

Seed Orchard Activities:

  • Help with the installation and maintenance of irrigation system.
  • Help with tree tagging, weed spraying and general maintenance.
  • Conduct vegetation control in progeny sites.
  • Conduct seedling fertilization.

Timber Cruising:

  • Use company data collector for field data entry and proprietary software program to create cruise reports.
  1. Describe the cruise data and stand characteristics in a written report.
  • Complete inventory sample plots. 
  1. Complete assigned graded inventory plots, primarily fixed radius. Sampling includes tree count, species, diameter, total heights, form-factor, crown heights, merch height, age log sort, log quality, length, and defect.
  2. Navigate to assigned stands, locate plots using a compass and pacing or GPS.
  • Complete inventory cruise maps.

Forest Engineering:

  • Timber harvest and commercial thinning layout.
  1. Assist Area Engineers in marking harvest unit boundaries, unstable slope and aquatic resource buffers according to GDRCo’s Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) prescriptions.
  2. Enter data into company timber management information system (TMIS).
  3. Create maps using GIS and GPS data.
  4. Assist in completion of Washington Forest Practice Applications.
  5. Assist in field level stand assessments for commercial thinning candidate stands.
  • Road design and layout.
  1. Assist Area Engineers and Road Engineer in road layout and harvest unit design.
  2. Mark road locations with flagging and paint.
  3. Traverse proposed road locations and unit boundaries with a survey grade GPS unit.
  4. Assess haul routes for ongoing maintenance and/or best management practices (BMP) upgrades associated with log and rock haul.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED 

  • Current enrollment in college forestry courses such as Remote Sensing, Mensuration, Silviculture or as a second year forestry student.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of how to apply road and harvesting design principles during field layout.
  • Must be proficient in the use of forest engineering equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate with the aid of a map and compass.
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite. • Proficient with smart device technology (Android or Apple).
  • Must be able to take responsibility for the quality of his/hers works products as well as his/hers own personal safe behaviors.
  • Must maintain punctual and regular attendance and present appropriate professional appearance at all times.
  • Must be an active participant in the company safety program.
  • Maintain effective and professional relationships with co-workers within immediate work group, outside the immediate department, and with key contacts outside the company.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  •  This position is located in Shelton WA.
  •  Works primarily (85 %+ of the time) in the field under varying topography and climatic extremes.
  •  Ability to orient, climb, and traverse steep rugged, densely vegetated terrain on a consistent basis in sometimes harsh weather conditions for long periods of time.
  •  Must have the ability to see distance and detail with accuracy.
  •  Must have ability to work independently and without immediate supervision in remote areas.
  •  Works in conditions that may expose employee wildlife encounters, poison oak, insect bites, nettles, pollen, dust, and pesticides.
  •  Requires the use of standard safety equipment in regulation with GDRCo.
  •  This position is a Physical and Mental Requirement Classification 3.
