Upstream Public Health seeks a highly-qualified, full-time, short term research associate for a rapid, complex research project.
Upstream Public Health seeks to understand how state-level policy changes to school competitive foods affect social health determinants focused on children’s health outcomes, school district revenue, and inequities. This analysis is part of a Health Impact Assessment led by Upstream Public Health in partnership with The Pew Charitable Trusts.

Projected Timeline:
The timeline for this research project is compressed and will begin in mid-August with the report complete by the end of December of 2011.
$3,000- $4500 monthly salary without health benefits for a 5-month duration. Full-time from late August 2011 to December 2011.
Research Responsibilities:
The Research Associate, as a key member of a research team, will be responsible for 1) working with a statistician to conduct an analysis of the health and financial impacts of state-wide legislation based on expert guidelines on HIAs and input from an advisory committee; 2) contributing to a literature review on health and financial impacts of competitive food legislation; 3) developing a set of case study information; 4) synthesizing and authoring the HIA analysis into a final report; and 5) co-developing policy recommendations. The researcher will contribute to refining the methodology, research questions and structure of the project.
Skills and Qualities:
Experience with a statistic package, Microsoft Office, and working on collaborative electronic documents required. Prospective researchers must demonstrate an ability to execute and complete a collaborative team research project with tight deadlines. We are looking for a team player with active listening skills that can work respectfully on a complex project with tight deadlines – and have fun with it.
