2017 Education & Outreach Internship Description
Public Land Name: Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve
Agency/Mission: The National Park Service (NPS) preserves the natural and cultural resources and values of 390 units of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. Craters of the Moon National Monument (CRMO) was established as a unit of the National Park System in 1924 in order to protect an area that “contains many curious and unusual phenomena of great educational value and has a weird and scenic landscape peculiar to itself”.
Position Title: Education/Outreach Intern
Location: Arco, Idaho
Position Description: The intern will communicate with the public and educational groups about the natural and cultural resources of Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve (CRMO). The intern would staff the visitor center and provide orientation and information about CRMO and the National Park Service including recreational opportunities and park regulations. The intern will also provide interpretive opportunities to the visiting public and educational programs to students focusing on the significance of volcanic resources at CRMO. This will include leading guided cave walks and hikes, giving formal presentations, and roving trails. Training is provided to learn interpretive/educational techniques and methods. Time is also provided to research and compile the content for each interpretive and educational program with the help of a mentor and supervisor. The desired outcome would be for the intern to make many contacts with visitors and students to help facilitate both intellectual and emotional connections to CRMO with the hopes that the visiting public will support the NPS mission. This is a perfect position for a student training to be an Earth Science teacher or who aspires to work for the National Park Service as a formal or informal outdoor educator or interpreter.
Qualifications: Ideal applicants should be pursuing a degree in a natural science field. Applicants must be capable of hiking at least 5 miles in hot & arid conditions over rough ground and be comfortable speaking before a group of people.
Position Dates: June 5-Nov 20, 2017 (24 wks), preferably candidate is here for park training beginning on May 22, but start and end dates are flexible.
Benefits: The selected intern will receive a total prorated stipend of $13,440.00/ $2,240.00 per month. Additionally, upon completion of the six month/ 24 week commitment the intern will receive two years of noncompetitive hiring status.
Housing Available: Furnished studio apartment shared with one other person or furnished 3 BR 2 Bath House shared with up to 6 people (must be flexible with co-ed dorm sharing if situation necessitates) will be provided at the Monument headquarters area at no charge. All cooking and dinning equipment provided. Laundry facility found on site. Applicants need to bring their own towels and bedding. Personal transportation needed to buy groceries, etc.
Physical/Natural Environment: The Craters of the Moon Lava Field is a composite field made up of about 60 lava flows and 25 cones. It is the largest and most complex of the Late Pleistocene and Holocene basaltic lava fields on the eastern Snake River Plain, and is the largest dominantly Holocene basaltic lava field in the lower 48 States. It has nearly every type of feature associated with basaltic volcanism.
Work Environment: High desert (~6,000 ft) — average summer temperature is between 50 and 90 degrees. Monument is located 18 miles from Arco, a small town of 1,000. Idaho Falls and Twin Falls are both about 90 miles away, but have all major shopping. Yellowstone and Grand Teton parks are less than 4 hours away. Sun Valley is only about 65 miles away.
