GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Conservation Educator will further outreach and education efforts by assisting in the planning and leadership of regional conservation day-camps throughout the state of Wyoming and 2 week-long overnight conservation camps near Dubois, Wyoming. Additionally, the position will assist in planning and executing the educational aspects of the Wyoming Outdoor Expo. The position will also assist creating lesson plans/ teaching resources and with the implementation of hunter education and R3 (recruitment, retention, reactivation) programs. He/she will teach various other conservation education programming in the spring and fall, providing the public with information around wildlife, fisheries, habitat management, ecology, hunting, fishing and other outdoor skills. This position is a 9 month appointment beginning in March and going through the end of November.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.
Delivering high-quality, engaging programming to youth and family groups.
Assisting in development of lesson plans for programs, activities and events.
Planning details and logistics of regional and overnight camps, under supervision of the conservation education coordinator.
Creating educational materials with the assistance of Game & Fish staff, as well as maintaining and organizing education equipment/materials.
Leading safe, engaging, and fun 3-day conservation day-camp experiences for middle-school aged students.
Teaching lessons at and serving as an overnight supervisor for 2 weeks of conservation camps for 9-10th graders.
Assisting instruction at hunter education courses, field days, and other R3 (recruitment, retention, reactivation) programs.
Helping to inform and educate the public about wildlife, habitat, and conservation at various other events such as the Wyoming Outdoor Expo, 4H State Shoot event, and public school programs.
Assisting with routine clean-up and setup of program areas.
Sharing a passion and knowledge of Wyoming’s abundant wildlife, recreational opportunities, and rich natural history.
Qualifications
Preference will be given to those with Bachelor’s degree in education, natural resource sciences, wildlife/fisheries biology, or another related field.
Ability to speak Spanish preferred but not required.
**Must have a valid drivers license.
KNOWLEDGE:
Must be able to work well independently with minimal supervision, as well as able to work well with others on a team and serve as a peer leader.
Requires flexible schedule, including travel and long days, working evenings and weekends.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work with all ages and backgrounds.
Must have the ability to work outdoors in varied terrain and weather conditions, and be comfortable pulling trailers and operating 4WD vehicles.
Must be able to responsibly maintain direct supervision of groups of up to 25 children/youth while involved with activities such as fishing, archery, outdoor science investigations, and team builders.
Knowledge of Wyoming ecology and wildlife, in addition to experience with archery, fishing, orienteering, first aid, and other outdoor recreation skills.
Must have excellent communication skills, strong organizational and leadership skills, enthusiasm, flexibility, and a passion for working with students.
Must demonstrate teaching skills and the ability to implement creative “hands on” teaching methods, as well as the ability to create new educational content.
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Weekend and holiday work will be required.
Position requires statewide travel and extended stays (4 days) in camper trailers during the summer season.
Position requires CPR certification & background check (both provided by WGFD).
Must have a valid driver’s license.
NOTES:
FLSA: Non-exempt
All new hires or rehires starting in a non-exempt position on or after January 1, 2018 are required to be paid hourly.
Tentative starting date is March 15, 2018 tentative end date is Nov. 30, 2018.
Uniform and other necessary gear will be provided when in the field.
Department housing is not provided.
