Responsible for providing vision, leadership, execution, and administration for campus environmental stewardship, sustainability, and natural resources programs and initiatives. The position focuses on sustainability practices in campus operations, projects, energy management, and procurement, but also collaborates closely with the part-time Sustainability Education Coordinator (faculty position) on programs that involve and affect campus community. This position also has a primary leadership role in the management of the Academy’s natural resources programs.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develop, implement, administer, document, and communicate comprehensive programs that promote environmental stewardship and sustainability (i.e. sustainable construction and renovation, sustainable facility operations, resource conservation, recycling, energy management, and waste reduction).
  • Serve as co-chair of the Natural Resources Management Committee; identify objectives and plan and execute management actions related to natural resources issues – including the implementation of the Natural Resources Management Plan.
  • Serve as co-chair of the Green Umbrella Advisory Board (with Sustainability Education Coordinator) and the Environmental Stewardship Committee.
  • Serve on the Town of Exeter’s Exeter River Committee.
  • Support and assist the Sustainability and Natural Resources courses including project-based/experiential learning/design-thinking courses such as Green Umbrella Learning Lab (GULL).
  • Collaborate regularly with the Sustainability Education Coordinator to ensure integration and communication on issues of stewardship and sustainability.
  • Support the development, maintenance, and execution of the campus Sustainability Master Plan.
  • Facilitate the integration of Strategic Plan Sustainability Initiatives with the Sustainability Master Plan, with the Sustainability Education Coordinator and the Green Umbrella Advisory Board.
  • Support the Energy Management Team and Facilities Management with recommendations for Energy Management initiatives.
  • Collaborate with administration, faculty, staff, and students on a wide range of environmental and sustainability projects and initiatives related to campus operations, and the academic and residential life experience;
  • Lead the management and maintenance of the Academy’s trail system, Colby Farm, and Fremont land and trails with support from designated Grounds staff, the Academy’s Natural Resources Committee, and outside service providers and consultants.
  • Collaborate closely with the Senior Manager for Grounds & Athletics on the implementation of campus natural resources management objectives into on-site planning and action.
  • Collaborate closely with the Managers of Mechanical Systems and Electrical Systems on the development and implementations of energy use reduction programs.
  • Collaborate with the Campus Architect on campus land-use planning, sustainable construction standards, and third-party certification of buildings, materials, operations, and project sites, including but not limited to LEED, WELL, SITES, GreenSeal, and Living Building Challenge.
  • Coordinate with local and state agencies, and direct and manage the work of consultants in the area of natural resources management.
  • Direct the implementation within the facilities management team of policies and programs to incorporate sustainable principles into all aspects of maintenance operations, new construction/renovation projects, purchasing practices and policies, environmental compliance, energy management, and job descriptions.
  • Periodically review and measure facilities operations to ensure consistency with established objectives, environmental best practices and efficiency opportunities.
  • Manage contracts with consultants, engineers, and service providers.
  • Make recommendations to purchasing, custodial services, grounds management, and dining services in the evaluation and selection of products and processes and third-party certification of products and processes.
  • Develop measurable data, and monitor and report program performance via written and/or verbal communication.
  • Provide support for campus planning initiatives including research and interaction with government agencies.
  • Collaborate with communications department to promote Academy’s sustainability initiatives;
  • Develop and manage budgets for assigned functional areas.
  • Present training topics to departmental and campus groups.
  • Attend relevant conferences, training and workshops such as Greenbuild, AASHE, ISEEN, natural resources management and teaching workshops and training, and environmental compliance conferences and training.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in the area of Environmental Science, Resource Management, or Sustainability.
  • Certifications in Sustainability and Energy Management desired.

Experience

  • 8+ experience required, preferably in an educational setting.
  • Experience in the development and management of an environmental stewardship/sustainability program preferred.
  • Familiarity with sustainable design and high performance building criteria preferred.
  • Proven ability to interact collaboratively in a teamwork culture with a broad range of constituent required.
  • Experience working with adolescents in an educational setting is preferred.
