Tracy Aviary is seeking a Youth Programs Coordinator, who will be responsible for coordinating and facilitating a wide variety of programs for youth audiences. These programs support Tracy Aviary’s mission to inspire curiosity and caring for birds and nature through education and conservation.

Typical work week is Tuesday-Saturday. This position requires some evening work.

Primary Duties

  • Coordinate logistics of Taking Flight Nights (teen STEAM cafes), including working with teen volunteers to develop the program
  • Coordinate Nature in the City, Tracy Aviary’s family-focused nature play program
  • Schedule and facilitate Tracy Aviary’s Scout programs, including workshops for Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts
  • Work with fellow education staff to write and edit environmental education curriculum as well as manage camp and class preparation
  • Facilitate a variety of education programs for audiences that range from toddlers to seniors

Organizational Duties

  • Actively attend department and institutional meetings
  • Assist with interdepartmental and institutional services
  • Provide support for program administration, such as communications, record-keeping, and evaluation
  • Mentor education interns, seasonally
  • Serve as a proactive ambassador for the Aviary and its birds through all interactions with visitors and general public

Minimum Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree or higher from an approved college or university with a major in biology, zoology, education, environmental science, or related field
  • 1-3 years of environmental education experience
  • Knowledge of informal learning theory and instructional design
  • Experience writing environmental education curriculum
  • Must work creatively and collaboratively; identify and solve problems; manage time efficiently; be a resource to others; be motivated, innovative, organized, and proactive
  • Word processing, document formatting and editing, library and internet research, public speaking, and other communication skills
  • Must speak, read, and write English fluently

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in an AZA accredited facility
  • Previous experience coordinating youth programs
  • Knowledge about regional birds and avian ecology
  • Bilingual, preferably in Spanish

Comments: This position does not work with birds or other live animals. This position requires facilitating programs outdoors throughout the year in varying environmental conditions that range from excessive heat in the summer to extreme cold in the winter.
