Duties & Responsibilities
Reporting to the Senior Communications Officer for Sustainability, this position is dedicated to serving the internal and external marketing and communications needs of the Harvard Office for Sustainability. He/she will use their experience as a creative storyteller and communications strategist to amplify the ideas and solutions being generated by our community of students, faculty, and staff as part of Harvard’s University-wide sustainability vision and priorities.
The Sustainability Communications Manager is responsible for providing high-quality communications services, acting as the organization’s brand ambassador and creative agent, and developing and distributing immersive, multi-media content. He/she will also collaborate closely with colleagues at OFS, as well as Harvard Public Affairs & Communications (dotted line to the Director of Content Strategy) and across the University’s Schools and academic/research initiatives, to streamline communications about the University’s holistic commitment to sustainable development, climate action, and translating research and teaching into action on campus in benefit to society.
Responsibilities
- Communications services:
- Manages University-wide communications campaigns for announcements, projects or programs, either independently or in collaboration with Senior Communications Officer. Monitors progress and oversees adherence to project plan and time frames throughout projects.
- Implements delivery of digital communications tools, including website, social media accounts, email newsletters, and annual online sustainability report
- Tracks and uses analytics from websites and broadcast email to report on engagement and recommend new strategies
- Develops strong partnerships with colleagues across the University to develop and disseminate content
- Supports the development of messages and content for senior leadership and assists in the dissemination of information to internal and external audiences.
- Brand ambassador and creative agent:
- Stewards the University’s sustainability branding and identity guidelines and associated resources or guidelines
- Designs internal and external communications materials and develops program content for University-wide initiatives and projects, including handouts, graphics, powerpoint presentations.
- Manages timeline and project deliverables, including resources required, for external design and website development vendors as needed to ensure projects are delivered on time and on budget.
- Content strategy:
- Works with stakeholders at OFS and across the University to generate compelling stories and content about sustainability activities for the website, social media channels, and Harvard’s news outlets
- Produces and incorporates multi-media, including video, illustration/graphics, and visualizations, into content to create immersive storytelling experiences.
- Manages an editorial calendar to ensure optimum dissemination of stories and content
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelors degree required.
- 3-5 years of project management experience with a focus on content creation and creative design, professional writing and editing, digital strategy and website management, preferably working in an academic institution or non-profit organization.
Additional Qualifications
- Proven ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects, work independently and in collaboration with team members.
- Experience and/or proven interest in environmental advocacy or sustainability/climate
- Experience with graphic design and video production preferred.
- Highly adept at translating complex information into relevant and understandable communications for multiple audiences.
- Experience with integrated marketing communications, strategy development, and implementation within large organizations serving a diverse population.
- Proven project management skills, and experience working with and managing external vendors and consultants.
