Position Description

The Seattle Information Technology Department is seeking two GIS professionals to perform GIS analysis and cartographic work, maintain data on multiple thematic layers, support GIS end users, develop training materials and user guides, and deliver end user training.  Temporary benefit eligible assignment is anticipated to last 6-9 months.

Job Responsibilities

  • Work with customers to analyze and document their needs and requirements
  • Design and create hard-copy and digital maps, map sets, atlases and other cartographic products
  • Design and develop complex analyses employing spatial and network analysis, integration of business data
  • Create, administer and edit GIS feature classes and tables using out-of-the-box ArcGIS tools
  • Perform research utilizing a variety of methods including but not limited to: manuals, documents, field checks, and other self-directed research
  • Manage and interpret various source materials such as plats, maps, engineering plans, hand-drawn sketches, legal descriptions and on-line research tools
  • Document procedures and guidelines
  • Coach and train end users
  • Independently resolve most routine problems while maintaining communication with other team members, supervisors and subject matter experts

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Note: Combinations of education and/or experience which provide an equivalent background to perform the work of the class will be considered.

Education: A two year or four year degree in Geography, Computer Science, Civil Engineering Technology, or related field

Experience: High proficiency and at least two years of experience performing spatial analysis, data manipulation, data maintenance, and production of cartographic products, using ArcGIS.  Experience with industry standard GIS/IT concepts, practices and techniques.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience performing GIS data maintenance (typically 2+ years)
  • Thorough understanding of legal descriptions pertaining to property boundaries
  • Ability to work efficiently in a deadline-driven environment and move between assignments with ease
  • Experience with Oracle and with Esri extensions and tools (Model Builder, Spatial Analyst)
  • Strong customer service, communication, training, problem solving and technical writing skills
  • Experience with scripting and software development tools (SQL, PL/SQL, VB.NET, C#, Javascript, VB Script, Python, or other programming languages)
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively within a multicultural workforce serving a diverse customer base
